Transision Training...DONE!

Post by bullojm1 »

I finished up my 15 hours of transition training this morning with 2.4 hours of landings and emergency procedures, along with a little intro to aerobatics to burn some time.

Here's what I learned:

1) Full-stall landings are easier at first until you learn the tricks of wheel landings
2) Its super easy to gain or loose airspeed from base-final.
3) The RV-7 likes to drop like a rock when the power is pulled back.
4) Managing airspeed (+/- 5 kts) on final is critical to a good landing
5) Wheel landings rock in the RV! I didn't really start to grease them until today.
6) Finally, and most importantly, the RV-7 is a great and fun airplane to fly!

Next up - insurance!

Awesome Mike!! Was your transition training in a 7 with a CS prop? I ask because a couple of your findings seem CS specific...loss of airspeed base to final, and dropping like a rock with the power pulled...

Just wondering. :) 8)

Wheel landings are the way to go!! I LOVE doing wheelies! 8) 8)

Yes, my instructor has a CS prop on his -7, just like I have one on mine. It was really the most perfect airplane to train in -- only difference was it had a horizontal induction instead of a vertical induction like mine! Can't beat that.

Yes! #3 is soooo right!

At 80 you will have a pretty good descent going that can transition into a nice flare if you do it right!

Who did you fly with Mike?

My local CFII friend gave me free time in his RV-7. It was freakin' sweet -- he would fly to my hangar and pick me up for a days worth of lessons. Can't beat that convenience!
