Enroute stops to Osh?

Post by poeboy »

Spike and I are planning to fly out to Osh and camp this year. Our starting point is Frederick, MD (KFDK) and we probably will be making two stops enroute to refuel and defuel, if you know what I mean. Any suggestions for good stops mid-Ohio and somewhere south/east of Chicago? Right now, we're looking at Richard Downing Airport in Coshocton, OH (I40) and maybe Gary, In (KGYY). Suggestions welcome, both good and bad experiences useful to know. We probably will be skirting up the east side of Chicago along the lakeshore underneath the Class B and would like to stop somewhere within a couple of hours of Osh so we have plenty of fuel and are refreshed. Also good to get some fine airport chow enroute!

Thanks!

Don't know about a stop in OH, but I'm from central IL and have been to most of the airports south/southeast of Chicago. I can recommend Lansing, IL (IGQ). Nice airport with a great restaurant call Shannon's Landing. It's bar-type food, but it's good.

Another one that's probably better, would be Valparaiso, IN, Porter County Airport (VPZ). There's a restaurant close, but not on the airport, that specializes in turkey-ANYTHING turkey. It's called the Strongbow Inn, and it's deeeeeelicious! :)

From there, it's an easy trip up the east side. Take a look and see if that works. Other airports with good food, are on the west side of Chicago. Shaumburg (06C) is RIGHT underneath the approach to 9R at ORD. I mean RIGHT underneath. You will be on downwind for 29 and have 747 on final for 9R right above you! Pretty cool! There's a restaurant there call Pilot Petes', and it's also very good.

Hope this helps!

A little out of the way, but if you need a weather stop and an overnight come into KUMP (indy metro) and you're welcome to crash here - spare room upstairs (no RV parts in there, either!). Das ain't cheap, but there are some places around with cheap fuel.
I won't even force anyone to buck rivets!

GREAT THREAD!

Where do I start? Maybe I will go in a linear fashion?

* The briefer last night said that under Chicago's Class Bravo on the East side was "the ticket" and it is unlikely to be granted passage through Bravo, so stay clear.

* Poefolk, we will need something Southeast of Chicago too! I am looking at the route this weekend and am considering these stops you have. Gary looked appealing, but after listening to Chad Lansing sounds good! Chad, what kind of a taxiway setup is this!

* Chad, I DEFINATELY want to stay away from ORD! KIGQ looks appealing, though!

* Thomas, thanks for the offer! If WX sux we may take you up on that! How many can you accomodate? I may be bringing a FIFTH, and I don't mean scotch!

CJ-

As many as you can bring - I have 2 empty bedrooms upstairs, one furnished. There is also a couch in the basement and plenty of carpeted floor space (no worries esp. if you're camping).
Aside from work, I'll be around all week except for Wed 7/27 when my pops and I are taking the day trip to OSH (with a local travel club - up and back in one day on a 737 or something).

Boy, wish I could contribute something here but I'm coming from the opposite direction. Anybody know any good stops between California and Wisconsin? After picking my way through the Rockies I'll be going in a beeline between Riverton, WY (RIU) and OSH.

I gotta check and see - I'm not sure what the flight times are. We leave at oh-dark-thirty on Wednesday AM and come back that night on the same plane but I don't have the specifics yet.
I'll be there if I can!

Thanks for the input, Chad - will take a look at your suggestions. And Thomas, thank you for the offer of a place for a break. Spike and I have to put all five of our brain cells together this week to settle on a route. I'll post here once we've decided. The airport at Coshocton (I40) has nothing but great recommendations on Airnav and cheap fuel to boot. Still looking for the second stop.

Keep those fingers crossed for good weather!

You're welcome. Don't know about fuel prices at those stops, but I do know the food is good!
