OT - RC airplanes

Chad,
Have flown for years. I have a high wing .40 trainer (Hobbico NextStar), and a Futaba 6 channel with a buddy cord if you want to play. Also have the Great Planes Lancair with .91 4 stroke with fuel pump.
I would learn from a trigear first, then go to a tail dragger, but not mandatory. There is a flying club near Covell SW of Bloomington (Sentral Illinois Radio Society). BTW, where and what is the June 9 meet? For a blast, you should check out a jet rally - I want to try and hit one this year.

I'd love to Carl! I am planning on going over to Rich's house this weekend to check out the DC-3, and see what his fleet looks like...yes, I do mean fleet! At one time he had something around 35 airplanes!!

The flying club at Covell is pricey if I remember correctly...you still a memeber?

The June 9th meet is at Covell. 9-4 I think. I have the flyer at home. I'll call you later today or tonight to give ya the details.

Any update, Chad?

I got a little motivated to do some work on my P-51. The engine has a bit of an overheating problem & the last time I flew it, I had to belly it in off the runway I was using because the engine quit

It didn't do too much damage to the palne, but it did manage to tear off the left aileron and the rudder somehow. It also managed to break 3 of the 4 blades of the prop- how it does that on an engine that's not running, I don't know

Anyway, here's some pics:

That's a beautiful wood prop Kelly!!

My update from this weekend is that I looked at several kits that Rich had for me to choose from. I ended up choosing a Zero because it's a single (less to buy and maintain), and it was a little cheaper. I want to get in this as cheap as I can to see what I like, and not lose a whole lot when I crash it.

The Zero is a 33" span styrofoam model. If I like it, he has a balsa Cessna 195 for me to do next.

A Zero as in a WWII fighter, or a generic model named a Zero? As I said before, I'm not really up on all the different names of R/C planes, but I know there's one called a Porter that has absolutely no resemblance to the straight lined, square cornered, pointy nosed beauty made by Pilatus

195's are always beautiful, too

Thanks for the complement on the prop

It's actaully pretty standard issue, except this one has a hub and each of the blades are interchangable. It's also special because it's really close to the scale size for the P-51, and it has the right number of blades. I'm not into adding tons of scale detail, but a smaller than scale two bladed prop just ain't right!

Yep, Zero as Mitsubishi A6M Zero from WWII. I know it's not the best model to start with, but I spent $20 on it with two electric motors, a speed control, two additional props, and the best glue out there. It'll be fun to build, and cheap to crash!

33.5" wingspan and 13oz flying weight. Made by GWS.

Well this thread goes back a ways! After TWO AND A HALF YEARS of working on and off on my 48" Cessna 195...I'm done with it!! I haven't put the wheel pants on it yet, but other than that, it's ready to fly!!

I also just started on a Hangar 9 RV-8 ARF...60" wingspan!!

Boy Chad that is really cool! What covering are you using for the metallic finish?

Somehow I sense a pattern emerging regarding the color scheme. Will we be seeing something similar on a certain RV7 we know of???

Thanks Jeff! It was a pain in the a$$ to build...but I'm really happy with the results! The covering is all Monokote...the silver is Chrome. I was told not to even try using Chrome Monokote for my first attempt at covering a model. That only made me want to use it more! It's not perfect, but it's REALLY good...

Hmmm...a pattern? Perhaps...it's not going to look like the 195, but it is going to be a vintage scheme, and it will have some red in it.

very nice looking plane.

I've been slowly building an electric 80" wingspan Curtiss Jenny. so far I've got the top wings framed and have started in on the bottom wings. I expect to be finished some time around. .. ohhh I don't know 2013 or so.

I to have been flying for a number of years. It's what got me started in my aviation carreer, and when the timing is better there will be an RV in my future.
