Ah HA! You registered as a ZZ Homebuilt! I see that on their website (www.ZZ_Homebuilt_Aircraft_Company) that they list for $200,000.
Seriously, they just charged you for a default value since they could not determine the value. Looks like you just need to collect receipts.

Update...
Update to my tax issue -- I waited every bit of the 30 days the State of Maryland gave me to respond to my tax bill. What I did was include the receipts for my engine, prop, airframe, avionics, etc.. (basically all items that cost me over $1000), then tossed in a few thousand for "misc parts", included a check for 6% of the calculated value and sent it to them. Today I saw that my check was cashed, so I am hoping this is the end of this process. It could be the first time I am glad money is out of my checking account ever! I ended up paying them about 1/4 of what they originally asked for.

Yeah I totally agree. I am sure I will get a letter. Hopefully it won't ask for more $$$! I will let you know. Let me know if you would like a copy of the letter I wrote them so its easy for you to pay your taxes when the time comes.

Sure, and I'll pick it up when I finally get around to stopping in on your project. *sigh*

I got a ride in Bill Cloughley's new RV-7 on Sunday and I asked if he ever received any confirmation of MD accepting his tax payment. Just like me, he never saw anything except for his check being cashed. I am sure you could call them up to get its status, but I like making as little contact as possible with the taxman. I printed out a copy of the cashed check for my records.
