Missed opportunity

Well because my buds in our local EAA chapter couldn't get their act together I missed my once in a lifetime chance to ride on a B-17. Sure this one never saw action. Sure there's lots of fiberglass parts on it now. But doggone it, it's a B-17!

Background: EAA is flying their B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" around the country hopping rides for lotso' bucks. They ask the local EAA chapters to help out with crowd control and trinket hawking. In return the chapter gets a percentage and the volunteers get a free ride on the B-17. Here's the catch: the ride is to the next stop on the circuit and you have to arrange your own transportation back.

That's the part our guys kept saying, "no problem" about. That's the part they all bailed on.

:bang:

Okay, I vented. Thanks for listening. Go back to building. Oh yeah, you're gonna' love this plane!

Scott,

I know your pain. When living in Oklahoma, I was lucky enough to actually log a few hours in the left seat in her. I know two of the pilots and one is a rated CFII which means LOG BOOK ENTRY for a B-17.

We had worked the plane in Tulsa and the next stop for her was in Birmingham, Alabama. The guy's asked me if I wanted to go with them and I could get as much time in the left seat that I wanted (this was before the FAA crack down, I don't believe the EAA will let anyone at the controls now). I had a bunch of Southwest airline tickets I could have used to get back to T-town, but I figured I was to busy at work to miss a day or two. STUPID!!! :bang: What was I thinking? I could have had another 3 hours of endorsed time easy.

Next time call me, I will gladly take some time off of work to fly over in my 6 and pick you up and give you a ride back to your place. I know how much I treasure that log book entry and I would never allow anyone I know to miss out on that opportunity.

Hang in there, she will be returning in a few years......

F.) Build a B-52 from scratch and surplus parts from the boneyard. ;-)
