I took a few photos at the Boone flyin today. There are a few of the flight up, some while there and then some on the way back. If you want to take a look you can see them at:

Cool pictures!
Thanks for the link.
Lots of nice airplanes there - lots of taildraggers! Our little fly-in had less turn out but lots of old tailwheel planes - luscombes, stinsons, C-140s, etc. A couple of -8s and -6/7s.

Great pics John! I have a couple that I need to get on the computer from today's fly-in at Jack Hollands. What a great day for midwest fly-ins!!!

It was ... except about 15-20 degrees cooler would have been better! In the shade of the hangar with the fan was OK, but it was HOT out in the sun!!
One of the little luscombes that took off with 2 on board (they have a 65 or 85 horse engine) was struggling to climb out - and that is with our lowly midwest DA.

Hey John,
Did you ask this guy why he drilled holes in his exhaust?
I see that the heat discoloration isn't affecting the drilled area and I wonder if it directs the exhaust note away from the cabin?
Better scavanging too I suppose due to some venturi affect?

I'm not sure how that works CJ. There were a couple of RV's there with the same drilled exhaust. I did not get a chance to ask about it. I'm hoping to see it again so I can. I believe this plane was from Burlington, Iowa.

Hey John,
Thanks for taking all those great pics, and for taking the time to archive them to share. I don't get out much, so it's great to have an easy opportunity to see such a variety of paint schemes, interiors, and panels. It's heartening to see all those steam gauges -- some of us have budgetary constraints...

Everyone is welcome! Hope you enjoy them.
I'll try to round up some more info on the exhaust. I usually think of things I should have asked after the opportunity is past. I spoke to the pilot briefly but id not get his name. I'm sure I'll see him again. Maybe at Osh.
Spike if you see any photos in the bunch you would like to add to the homepage rotation feel free to grab them.
As far as the steam gauges, there were a lot of them. MAny of these planes have been flying for some time also. I believe it was the pilot of the plane with 33 on the side that said his had been flying for 16 years.

John -
I'm pretty sure that #33 is Dick Martin's RV-8 that is currently hitting a top speed of 243mph! (out of Green Bay, WS) The sam James cowl is a small part of what he has done to get up to speeds like that!
He spoke to our RV group a few months ago and said the bigest two speed mods you can do to make your RV fast is build it straight and build it light!

Yup, that is Dick's plane.
Packin' it with tons of hosses helps out a bunch as well!

FAA database says N7750J (see pic previous to the exhaust closeup) is registered to Jeff Diewold in Des Moines. Someone could send him a letter....

No not an RV13 it is an RV-NM (noise maker) - that thing is LOUD!
I did a little more snooping and found Jeff's phone number and he is in Burlington now looks like. I will try to call him and get the scoop on the exhaust. Burlington is in Des Moines county. I'll report back on what I find out.

I could be wrong...usually am but... I think that cheese grater on the exhaust is a muffler of sorts.

Okay guys, I got some info on the exhaust. I talked with Jeff and he said that his is a copy of his friends exhaust. I knew I saw two planes with the same exhaust treatment. Hi friend bought a Forsling Exhaust and the tips are sqeezed shut some and between that and the holes it is supposed to lower the noise by about 1 1/2 decibels. Jeff made his own version. He said they really liked the Forsling Exhaust and tht it seemed to be an excellent product. John Forsling is the manufacture and they usually have a booth at Osh it sounds like.

Thanks for looking into it for us!
I can't believe how many exhaust vendors are popping up!
