Tank leak testing

As some of you may know, we have a highly trained satellite navigation and guidance expert as one of our members ... he and I were talking about tank testing this evening.
I asked him, as someone well versed in higher math, if he could calculate how much the water level should drop in the tube for a given temperature change.
His response?
"Uhh, I don't know about earth stuff."
