Hi - JohnR invited me to join here... My name is Dave and I'm building an RV-9A (but maybe I'll change my mind to -9 before the fuselage). I'm building with the help of my 10 year old daughter and 2 dogs!

I've finished the tail, installed heat in the garage, and have a few more weeks to go before the wings arrive.

This is more of a test post, but I'm sure I'll be bugging you guys for help. In fact, I was making a list of all the cool stuff I'm going to be buying soon and I got stuck on landing lights. Since I can't afford HID, are people buying the round or rectangular Duckworks lights? What is the reall difference to me?

I went with the rectangular Duckworks and I plan on replacing the bulbs with the Silvania Silverstar Ultra. Not HID, but pretty darn close for fractions of the cost.

Dang, another dog lover. The wife and kids have their eyes on a yellow lab puppy. Guess I better get with the program.

Chad rolled his own and they look really nice. It might be something you would want to consider.

I'll give you a call sometime and see when would be good to drp of the wing stands. I will be in CR a couple of times next week.

Another option to consider is the LED landing lights that are being talked about now. They aren't ready yet, but they might be by the time you are ready for them. That lighting decision really can be made when you put your leading edges together, or AFTER the entire airplane is finished. They will be easy to retrofit.

The Sylvania Silverstars are THE BEST alternative to HID's (and they're CHEAP!--$25 for a pair). When my bulbs burn out, I will go with Silverstarts, unless LED's are ready.

Ummm, well... as you can see everyone has their own ideas when it comes to lights. Me? I am going to install Christmas lights all along my cabin and yes, they WILL be the blinking kind!

I think Im going to go with one HID and one regular for landing & taxi lights respectively. Ill probably end up with a square duckworks for the taxi light.

Only you CJ! Actually, now that I think about it, Christmas lights are NOT a bad idea...Hmmmm, you could paint your nose red too!!

Dave, I love your avatar! I used to have a pic of my oldest boy as my avatar, but now that he is not an only child, I changed it. My wife and I have two Goldens, one 3.5 years, one 6 months. They are our kids, and my wife shows them in the obedience ring and field trials for the younger one. My wife would love the Santa hat!

I just ordered a couple of LED fog lights to try out. I'm going to compare the brightness of the LED lights to the Duckworks landing lights I installed on my RV-4... which are basically fog lights. I am really hoping to go all LED on my RV-7. I'll post a (very subjective) side-by-side comparison of the light output from both units once I have received them. I have a feeling they will end up on my Camry and I'll install SilverStars in my landing and taxi lights though.

Chad, we have 2 goldens, a 2 year old and a 7 year old (also had one who was 11). They are the best dogs. I can post a better picture, once I figure out the hosting thing.

As for the landing lights, I can't wait to see the LED light test. I think I'll go for round duckworks, unless the LEDS are ready. The Chadwork lights are pretty cool, but I'm not sure my metal bending skils are up to the challenge! Maybe when I get there I'll be more confident.

I too will be building an RV 9 (probably a 9A). Got my preview plans and have been reading and reading and well...................................reading.

Think Santa is bringing me a tail kit (my wife said I might get some tail at X-Mas, I think she was talking about airplanes).

Guess we will have to wait and see what is under the tree X-Mas morning.

Hi Terry! I talked about an RV-9A for 2 years and only bought the preview plans ( )

My wife is way smarter than I am and knew what needed to be done...so she bought the tail herself and had it delivered for Father's Day this year! What a woman!

I've now overcome my previous inability to spend large sums of $$ on myself, and my wing are due to ship next week (except the spars are apparently back ordered ) I can't wait to start building again.

I have zero taildragger time, so I should probably build the 9A....I'm going to at least try a taildragger once before deciding.

Just working on my ticket now. About 20 hours logged (one of the main reasons I looking at the 9. I do have some very limited "unofficial" time in a Cub and a Luscombe. Before I get to the choice of the third wheel, I am going to have my license and maybe work on my tailwheel endorsement. I still look at the 9A as a entry lvl airplane as far as low time pilots go and the A as far as resale. The 9A will be my first airplane, but I doubt it will be my last

We're going with the standard rectangular lights but will upgrade to the 100w H3 bulbs or even 130w

With my neighbor's help, I picked up 2 big wing boxes at ABF Freight yesterday and got them into the shop undamaged!

Now I know where'll I'll be for the next several months...

Haven't had a chance to inventory them yet, but I have lots of time off between now and January.... What a good looking bunch of parts. I tried to tell my wife how nice the spars look and she looked at me funny!
