trying to wrap my head around my plans for the trip

when is everyone planning on arriving? I'm planning to leave saturday morning, I don't know if I should stay overnight somewhere en route or if I should get to OSH saturday. I think I read somewhere that camping isn't open til sunday; is this correct?

Camping opens 1 month before the show starts.

Patti and I are Sunday -> Saturday.

I think aircraft camping waiver starts Sunday. It's just a regular old airport up until the show opens (yeah, right!)...at least to the feds. Like Spike said, Scholler is open for business!

so arriving saturday would be ok? Maybe even less hectic?

What exactly is Scholler? :?

For sure if you're driving. There are people camped there right now for the show!

Camp Scholler-the name of the campground on the airport where drive in campers set up tent cities.

ohh, well I'll be flying in and airplane camping.

In that case, do I need to wait til sunday?

Okay, flying. I've done it four times. READ THE NOTAM. READ THE NOTAM. READ THE NOTAM. I'm sure you have, but I can't stress it enough. There will be PLENTY of people who just think they know what the procedure is, and screw things up. DON'T BE ONE OF THEM!

Also, the planning guide-
http://www.airventure.org/2007/planning ... _guide.pdf
-has most of the info you need as far as what to expect on the ground for camping and such. It says on page two that aircraft camping opens on June 22, so it is the same dates as the other camp. You will be good to go in on Saturday.

Here's another MUST READ page about camping in the North 40 area-
http://www.airventure.org/2007/planning ... mping.html

Read this stuff if you haven't already. At least one of your party has to be an EAA national member to camp.

Enjoy the experience! It's a FANTASTIC feeling flying in there during the show!

oh, JUNE 22nd. Ok. I had read all this and was planning my trip based on the assumption that I had read JULY 22nd, which is sunday!

But based on the comments above, does the flyin NOTAM still apply on saturday, since it's just a plain 'ol airport?

Looks like they moved the last day of 'plain 'ol airport' to Thursday. Notam is in effect Friday July 20th...so fly the Notam approach.

If you end up stopping, Bloomington (ILLINOIS, NOT INDIANA, KBMI) is right on your way, and an hour and a half flight to OSH the next day...I'll get you a deal on fuel...

well I'm gonna have to stop regardless of whether I make it to OSH saturday or sunday. I haven't yet planned a stop, but I was gonna do it based on fuel prices.

BMI looks like a good stop, it gets me around the chicago bravo without taking me too far out of the way. Perhaps we can coordinate a late lunch saturday? :D

I'm going up Sun am. I've never gone up a day early, but a number of folks have commented positively on going up a day or two early and watching all the planes come in. Thus, I will spend Sun afternoon with a lawn chair and a cooler next to the flightline watching the action :) .

Sunday is a good day to arrive, you can get in with your wristband for Monday. We've always gone up on Sunday but this year we won't get there until Monday due to other commitments.
