should I get a hangar?

I have an opportunity to pick up a hangar at Winder, KWDR... a friend of a friend is moving out of his, and we can take it over from him. $275/mo. I don't have dimensions yet, but it's a T-hangar with power.
I'm nowhere close to NEEDING it for the RV, but I do have a car I need to store, and I don't think it's the kind of airport anyone would give me any grief over that. I could keep the cherokee in it, but it's a 2 hour drive. I think I may opt to keep the cherokee at McCollum and fly to Winder to get at the stuff in my hangar. I'll probably keep a motorcycle in the hangar to get around out there.
That'd mean I'm paying $400 a month between the hangar and my tiedown at mccollum. Lot of money, but may be worth it.
Thoughts?

ABSOLUTELY!
I think EVERYONE should have a hangar!
Move the Cherokee there and anything else you need to store.
Two hours is a long ways away. Nuttin' closer?

atlanta is a dead zone as far as hangars go.
Also, it's a 2 hour drive assuming no traffic. the drive out there requires that I go all the way down 75 into atlanta then back out 85 through gwinnett, almost to athens. On a weekday, it'll be a four or five hour drive.
I don't particularly want to move teh cherokee out there, because I would rather fly to get there.

Holy crap! 4 or 5 hours on a weekday, and 2 on the weekends or no traffic? Not worth it to me bud! I had a hanger that was 40 minutes from me a few years ago, and that SUCKED! I feel for you guys that have to commute to your hanger...

Sounds like you need to move closer to the hangar. What is more important here, anyway??!

it's only 45nm straight line, but there's no direct way to drive it... you have to drive on three of the four worst interstates in atlanta.

There is really only one other airport besides my current base that I'd be willing to DRIVE to, and it's about 30 minutes away. It's the next closest airport in terms of driving distance, and of course it's got no hangar space available.

Can you rent it out to someone else & maybe make a buck or two until you either REALLY need it, or decide you don't want it?

Subletting usually doesn't work for one reason or another.

I used to live an hour from the hangar/plane. It stunk, and I didn't fly that much. If you are thinking of getting it so that you can finish your plane, I say forget it. If you have to drive 2+ hours to work on the plane, you will never finish it.
Hell, I have mine in the basement and don't seem to have the time

Ian,
I commute 1 hour each way to my hangar, and it gets pretty old. 34 miles one way on a state highway and probably about 25 lights. I didn't have many options available. For your RV you may find something on the North side, maybe a private field. I'm not sure where you are at, but I used to live about 4 miles from Mccollum. I've seen some fields up by Canton and Cartersville. That was a few years ago. Sounds like a nice flight with your Cherokee checking out some of these fields.

I'd rather have my plane tied down outside close by than in a hangar that could conceivably be 4 - 5 hours away. You may be able to rent hangar space at a nearby FBO to complete your plane if you need to at some point.

canton, cartersville, jasper, calhoun all have no hangar space, and the closest of them is a 30 minute drive.

Hey Ian,
We can fit you in the group hangar at Copperhill, TN (1A3). Cheap too!

I have built almost all of my RV-6A in a 16'X24' shop. It has heat and in the summer I install a room air conditioner in a window. I have to take it into our two car garage to fit the wings and have done that three times. I just moved the fuselage back to the shop today. I store the wings in the garage along with the empenage. I have 22 miles to the airport where out EAA Hangar is located and it takes about a half hour. I am avoiding moving my airplane there until, I am ready to assemble it the final time and fly it! I hope to start that process in late February or March 2008. The cost of gas and time. I can walk out to my shop and work for 5 hours or 5 minutes. For the cost of hangar rent for a year or two you can build a decent two car garage if you have room on your lot. If the rent doesn't pay for two car garage the savings in gas will!
