Boring formation videos

Ya know, I was talking to Kevin J. in my shop last night while he tuned in the latest formation video from some other website. Every time I looked at the screen, the image looked the same! You could watch the entire video by fast forwarding the whole thing and cut it down to about 30 seconds.

Now, I like flying probably MORE than the next guy. I like everything about it! Anything that has a plane remotely associated with it, is cool with me! Don't get me wrong. It is okay because the content is good.

Am I alone in thinking that this seemingly endless supply of videos are narcissistic and mundane?

I suppose I don't watch ball sports or car racing for the same reason.

I know, I don't have to click on them. I usually don't.

Do you watch these "look at me" displays of narcissism?

The latest one was a snoozefest. Park the planes next to each other on the ramp and run tape  It would be much more interesting to me if it were shot from the trail position and there was some actual movement, like the wings swapping positions or something.

I thought the one taken from the flap bracket of the Rocket with the two RV's in trail was OK. I'd still rather see acro and low level stuff though :)

I think I have to take issue with some of these formation comments.
Chad, the video might be "Boring", but formation flying certainly is NOT!!!

Why not just come right out and just say it guys. "Doug Reeve's" videos of formation flying on vansairforce.net are not something you find interesting. It's a free speech country, so why not just voice your opinion about whome you are referring to.

Ok, granted Doug's videos don't exactly capture the formation flying very well. HOWEVER, might I suggest you go to the following website and watch a few of these formation videos which I find capture formation flying and the dedication and skill required much better: http://www.glassovercast.com/main.html Go to "OTHER STUFF" then select "Sample Videos". The 2003-2004 hightlight video, and the Vulture Video are the one's to watch. I know Frank personally and he spend's countless hours shooting, editing and producing some really nice video footage.

I have a very strong passion for formation flying, and even though I don't find Doug's videos exciting, I do watch them from time to time. I guess for me though, when I watch them, I'm paying more attention to the pilots station keeping, positions, manuevers, etc. To fly formation well, requires skill, practice, knowledge, and the desire and passion to want to always improve upon it. It also takes TRUST and you must be comfortable with whome your doing it with.

I'm "hearing" most of you commenting on the video presentations of formation flying being poorly done, but I hope you aren't saying formation flying is something that's mundane and boring.

I hope I didn't come across as saying it's boring to DO. I certainly enjoy formation flying! :)

Videos are though...to me.

I liked them to begin with but now that everyone is doing them they are getting boring. Not to diminish the skill that folks have to have to do formation flying or aerobatics. But a video of an RV-6 doing a loop, followed by another video of an RV-7 doing a loop, and oh, there's an RV-8 doing a loop. I would definitely agree that they are narcissistic.

Now the videos I do NOT get tired of seeing are the ones that everyone screams are dangerous. That guy flying the RV-4 down the river was great. I love to see videos of interesting or dangerous approaches too.

Not so Boring
