you're the wicked pissa snowmobile guy, right?

Got any experience with the old school Fuji/Chaparral 440cc engine? I've got an old 70's Red Devil Formula 440 car with that engine in it, and I need to get it all running and tuned up.

No specific questions yet, just gauging whether I can bombard you when the time comes ;) One of the carbs has a broken main jet, and the fuel pump was toast. They're Mikuni VM38 roundslides, and a mikuni vacuum driven fuel pump, and the pump's diaphragm was leaking. I suspect that had a lot to do with why the thing wouldn't run (I haven't touched it in over a year).

I have since rebuilt the fuel pump and I have new jets on hand for the carbs, just gotta put the thing back together and see what I can make it do.

The goal is to get it running decently, fix everything on it, have a bit of fun with it, then clean it up, paint the frame, glass up the cracks in the body and give it some beautiful fresh paint, then try to unload it for a couple grand :D

Ian,

Well, sleds were my "thing" for about 20 years or so. In that time I *DID* have my share of 440's.

One of which was a Fuji 440 that I did rebuild with 38 mm Mikuni roundslides! The vacuum operated fuel pump was a source of trouble at one time or another as well.

It is a good solid mill and has transported my carcass from country to country many times!

I would be glad to help you with any questions you may have. By the way, I don't think it would ever generate a couple of grand for you. It might be a $500 mill all rebuilt.

Did it come out of a Polaris, per chance?

I rebuilt a 1984 Polaris Indy 400. That was about 20 years ago, but I have a good memory.

The engine itself isn't worth much, but the whole racecar, with a freshly glassed and painted body, oughta be worth a fair amount.

The newer Formula 500 racecars have rotax 494s and 493s in them, that's the current racing spec, and a decent car sells for $8-11,000

Pull that little 440 out of there and put a 900 in it. My T-Cat has mikuni 38's and V-Force reds plus some other toys in it.Damn things almost scary on the ice drags!!!

My first experimental is a 500 cc LC  rotor craft. Now I use it for a scooter!

Yes I use it for a sccooter to keep the engine in good shape. This is good because I don't have to put the rotor on. 8)
