Congratulations Chad! Wow, your dad is a trooper. My dad refuses to buck rivets. Guess who gets to crawl under my panel?? (which is fine really, since I have been at the airport I have been known as the electronics guru who can fit under an RV-8 panel. Childbirth has to be less painful than working under the -8's panel!)

I know you are fairly meticulous with your progress, do you know how many rivets you have installed?

My current count as of yesterday...

Total rivets including factory set (wings & center section) 16,225

Total rivets set (including drilled out) 16,014

Total rivets set (without drilled out) 15,804

Total drilled 210

I am thinking he did, thats why I asked. It wouldnt surprise me if he had an excel file a flow chart and a powerpoint presentation breaking down all the rivets.

I never kept count over my career as a sheet metal mechanic as to how many rivets I have installed or removed, but when someone asked me to give a rough estimate, about 10 minutes of thinking and adding I came up with a low ballpark number of 1.2 million. That number even shocked me because I never thought about it all those years.

That's absolutely unbelieveable. And I thought I was detail-oriented. I'll bet Vans couldn't even give you an accurate answer about how many rivets are in this thing.

I'm not sure who gets the most kudos, you for counting them all, or Tom for hammering well over a million of 'em. Honestly, my hat's off to both of you.

Maybe it's time for everybody to come up with an appropriate call sign for you. ??? Anybody have any good ideas?

One thing I can thank you for... when people ask me how many rivets are in this thing, I'll have a good answer for them, without having to do all the counting.

I dont deserve any kudos for all those rivets(but a hearing aid down the road would be nice), I have been getting paid for well over twenty years for riveting and being a sheet metal mechanic.

How much time do you think you spent counting all those rivets ?

Just think if you didn't count them, you might be flying it already .

Congrats Chad! Now that the riveting is done, get ready for "rivet withdrawal".

It is a chronic, unrelenting affliction, characterized by aimless wandering around your house with a glazed look on your face. I have yet to discover a cure, other than the obvious resorting to being a repeat offender. With continuing therapy and close monitoring by my wife, I have been able, so far, to resist......

It looks like you are nearing the end of the beginning to paraphrase Winston Churchill. As you will find out, an experimental plane is never finished My first flight was in 2005 and I am always "improving" it.

I read the rest of your website pages. Don't worry about having your interior installed for weighing. If its not completely installed, you can simply tape the pieces in their general locations and their weights will be accounted for.

Don't get in a hurry at this late stage of the process. Take some time to celebrate your accomplishment. In life, we strive for great achievements and must stop for reflection or we will let the moment get away from us.
