I'm working on getting my smoke system done, and with recent light shed on how to make some nozzles on the cheap, thanks to Tony Spicer, I'm finally doing some work with my friend Ray's help. He's good on the lathe and welding, so we made the nozzles a while back, and are now working on getting the base for the nozzles to attach to the exhaust made. Here are some pics...
The nozzles, not yet welded-
The fitting was drilled out to accept the nozzle tube-
Making a bushing-
Base, bushing, and nozzle (without the actual nozzle in place)-
The bushing and base will get welded together, and then threaded to accept the NPT threads on the fitting.
More to come...

I never planned on a smoke system, probably because I've never enn around them. But I'm thinking smoke would be a cool addition.
couple Q's
1. how well does it work with a 4 pipe system?
2. how much oil does it take for a couple minutes of smoke?
3.is there a way to add a simple small portable system? (i'm thinking a self contained unit the size of an O2 cylinder)

1. I would imagine you would just run it off of two pipes, but not 100% on that.
2. 5 gals I'd say. I have a small windshield washer reservoir for mine, and I'm only looking to get 45 seconds or so with it. But I only want to blip for traffic, and the occasion rural runway pass, which takes maybe ten seconds or less.
3. The simplest, ready to go system is Smoking Airplane setup. Nice, but around $800. I have $120 in mine so far, with two more SS braided lines to buy at $25. Rolling your own isn't gonna be the easiest thing to do...actually, my original idea was to use an O2 cylinder, but I couldn't figure a way to mount it in the space I had.

5 gals!!!! ok that's out. Occasional runway pass or 2 is all I'm after. I thought maybe a person could get by with a pint or so.

The smokin' ones have a pump that pumps out at about .8 gal per min. With their smallest tank at about 3.5 gal it will run for about 4.5 minutes straight. I suppose if you change the pump with a lower output you could run longer with a smaller tank? But won't this affect smoke density (thinner, lighter smoke trail)?

Sure you can. Just because you have 5 gal doesn't mean you have to top it off. Will a pint even fill the hoses from the tank to the nozzles?

That's all I'm doing with mine, so I don't need 5 gals either. I think my tank is one gallon, and will suffice for my needs.

I hope to add smoke someday mostly for traffic...be seen so they can avoid me.

Welding the base together...
Silver soldering the nozzle to the fitting...
Both pieces for each pipe...
We'll clean up the welds a bit, drill and tap the bases, and then it's on to install in the airplane!
