Great day to be a RV'r

Post by hydroguy2 »

Some of you may know I've been having issues with Aurora. I had the engine quit on final last week and stumble badly while taxiing. I was afraid to leave the pattern. I work alot this time of year so getting time to work on the plane was an issue. But I managed to get her running very well. My idle mixture was out of whack(very rich) which in turn caused me to have the idle speed cranked way down but masked by the rich mixture.....Worked while everything was winter, but not as we reached normal OATs. Anyway chased that problem and a few calls to AirFlow Performance and also Bill R helped me with my Pmag questions. Still had some troubles and ripped the floor out...found a not torqued fitting on the fuel filter, we suspect it was sucking air occasionally compounding my other issues.

I have a lot planned and needed the plane to do them. The Big Sky Air Racehttp://bigskyairrace.org/BSAR/Welcome.html is coming up and we had a TV commercial to shoot today. So this morning up at 5am and to the hangar to finish putting her together. She ran better than ever as we flew to HLN..we were early!
RobertAllen Nissan is one of the sponsor of our race and offered to fund a shoot, so here is a Need for Speed staging pics for the video. Next we did some low passes. I have a face for radio so I'm not in any shots...that's ok, Aurora was a star!

Great news that you got the engine issue sorted out! As a tv character used to say "I love it when a plan comes together". Good luck with the rally(s).

We are cheering for you Brian. I hope you win the race by a mile. Also glad that you got your engine issues sorted out. There are usually some small nagging problems. I installed my outside air temp sensor in the NACA fresh air inlet duct. I also had the wrong oil sensor for my engine. It took a while to get those little bugs sorted out. I also purchased $100 alternator from Airzonia, which went South before the 25 hours were up. I replaced that and got the oil temp sensor and that changed that. Finally in the Spring of 2010 we moved the OAT sensor to the bottom of the right wing tip and now my OAT is relatively accurate. In January 2010 outside temp was about 20 degrees F but the OAT was showing 62 degrees F. Clearly engine heat was getting to the sensor.

Here's the edited version. I thought they would have more fly by footage(we did 5 passes) and wished it said something about SportAir Racing League. But it came out ok. Robert Allen Nissan paid for the video work andTV time on 4 stations so they get the approval rights.

The speaker was Kevin, one of the co-host for the race. He flys a LongEZ and that was his 4yr old son Austin. Kevin's nickname is "Hollywood" he loves the spotlight. also goes by "MayDay" from declaring an emergency when his gear stayed down and locked one day in a Mooney and when he accidently locked himself inside that Mooney.

At our meeting this weekend, I found out that Commericial cost $15000 to produce and air on 4 stations. :o ...I only burn 8gals of Avgas, so it wasn't me.

Just got back from doing 3 radio interviews promoting the race also.....only airs once but cost $0. :)

It was well done Brian, and your flyby in a tv spot is something to remember.

Brian I really enjoyed your fly by and the ad. I had trouble opening it here but it may have been operator error or it could have been the humid weather here. Again it was great!
