Longeron trimming?

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to fit the firewall on my fuse, and one of the last tasks before I do is to trim the forward end of the longerons - the ones I spent so much time measuring and cutting to a gnat's ass a few months ago. :bang:

The instructions call for trimming them back to 3/4" behind the forward edge of the side skins. I'm probably overlooking something obvious...but where is this measurement made? The longeron angles down a little relative to the skin edge...should I measure from the top of the side skin where the distance is shorter, or the bottom of the longeron?

The last thing I want to do is cut them too short...anybody got a clue for the clueless?

Thanks,

Dave

edit...sorry Spike, this probably should have been in the RV-7 forum!

Dave,

Good question. Yeah, it's crazy how Vans has you cut these to 1/64" or whatever, and then you end up trimming them anyway. I cut mine parallel to the edge of the skin and everything worked out just fine. Here's a link to my log page for this task:

Here's a picture after the cut:

Most excellent, Bruce...thanks for the picture and the link! I have a bad habit of over-analyzing things, and simply cutting the ends parallel to the skins just didn't occur to me until I asked around.
