I've been itchin' to try out my wide angle video camera. I went out yesterday and mounted my new wide angle video camera on the strut of my C172. The camera comes with a curved helmet mount that fits perfectly on the wing strut (with aircraft adhesive [duct] tape). The video camera is made by Drift:

Not the slickest production, but you get the drift (pun intended). I forgot to empty my memory card, so it stopped recording before I landed.

Excellent video, and I'm very happy to find another classical music fan among us! Flying to Mozart... can't beat it! I have this piece on the stereo out in my shop on a regular basis. Love it!

I've had some guys in my EAA Chapter ask how I mounted the camera. I'm working on a "how to" video right now.

It's my favorite Mozart piece as well. I still remember a music history class I took in college where the professor told us that the best way to remember the composer was to sing along with the melody with "Oh my God, Oh my God, This is Mozart!".

This is my mount for the drift camera. A piece of .032 aluminum, pre-curved to the contour of the top of the wingtip, which I used 4 countersunk screws to attach the provided helmet mount for the camera. This assembly is then screwed to the airplane by using two of the screws that attach the wingtip. I have a piece of ace bandage contact cemented to the underside of the aluminum mount to prevent scratching the paint.

The helmet mount allows you to rotate the camera to whatever angle you want. The lens can also be rotated to achieve a level image. For my video, I had the camera cocked 45 degrees toward the cowl which allowed a view of me in the cockpit.
