D-100 connect to GTX327

Post by smittysrv »

Not getting much of a response on the "other" forum. Maybe yous guys can help me out. I know about connecting Dynon D-100 Pin 13 to the Garmin GTX 327 Pin 19, but what about the ground wire surrounding the Dynon D-100 Pin 13 wire? Where does it connect on the GTX327?

Also there is a short black and white wired coming out of the Dynon D-100 that is labeled "Pigtail ground for shielded braid". What is that for?

Sometimes I wish I had gone with steam gauges... I ain't no EEElectrician.

Pigtail ground for shielded braid is most likely to be electrically connected to the shield of cable.

Dont know about pin 13.

The Dynon website description mentions the pigtail in the harness description, but the printed installation guide doesn't.

Exactly. Some (data) cabling (like the autopilot servo lines on my 9) have a shield that needs to be electrically bonded to a ground sink to protect the line from noise. In some of the nicer cables that shield has a pig tail on it to make it easier to bond to. Otherwise it can be a pain because it is basically a braided hose.

It sounds like your Dynon unit gives you a pigtail as well to tie that shield to.

FWIW, cable shields are normally connected to ground only at one end of the cable. It's conceivable that the drain (shield) wire is connected to the backshell of the connector. If that's true (ohmmeter will tell you), and the backshell finds its way to ground through the device it's plugged into, then you wouldn't ground the other (pigtail) end of the shield.
