The JIG is UP!

Well, I have finally bitten the bullet and nailed down a location in the shop for the wing jig!

After some hemming and hawing about the location and how I will live around it for the duration of it's existence, I deceided to place it close to the big bench for ease of assembly and I will still be able to fit my JEEP inside. Maybe even the snowmobile as well!

Almost done with the deburring and fluting of the main ribs!

I best hurry up, or Murrish will pass me!!!

BTW, Whatta way to celebrate my 600th POST!!!

Nice work on the jigs CJ. Just wanted to let you know that I finished the rudder and elevator today, so my empennage is complete. NOT!!! Just kidding, I just finished cutting and deburring all the rudder stiffeners tonight. I need to get off my butt and order my wings soon or I will be sitting around doing nothing until they arrive. Actually that may be an excuse to put up a fence in my backyard. Landscaping is definitely going to wait until May/Jun. I am still debating/researching the use of Proseal on the stiffener tips too, so that may slow me dow a bit.

John,

It's hard to tell from the picture, but which side will have the root of the spars and which side has the outboard end of the spars ? The single post or the double post ?

Don't forget that the outboard end of the spars needs to have space for the skins to extend out past the spars by about a 1/2 inch. Or you'll have to make cut-outs for the skins to slip into on your aluminum angle.

Also, how are you going to clamp the bottom spars to hold them in place at the bottom on the single post side ?

John,

When building your wing jig, you need to remember that you have to be able to adjust the angle of the support at one end in order to remove any twist in the wing. You will need to be able to do this independently for each wing so it will need to be done at the 2 post end in your configuration. You will also want to attach the rear spars as well so that the wing is very firmly held in the jig so that there is no movement once you get everything adjusted.

I just did my wing jig this past week and am almost ready to rivet the skins on.

Good luck,

Thanks for your help, guys!

Well, ummm.... what I was thinkin' is...

This is the root side:

Image

I am going to sandwich a slender piece of wood between the angle and spar to cushion and level the spar. After that, it will be secured into place.

The tip side has short angles which are adjustable to take any flex out of the spar.

Image

The angle can pivot on that screw and be secured with at least a couple of others.

What you see here is temporary and this bracket:

Image

...will be drilled to fit on top of the other bracket and provide the attachment to the end rib.

...and Paullie, the trailing spar will be secured in a similar (currently uncertain) method. Any suggestions?

Am I on the right track?

John,

You should be ok as long as you can adjust the angle of the bracket on the outboard end to adjust for any twist. Make sure that everything is very strong and can't change. I have pictures of mine but can't post them here as I don't have them on a web site.

CJ, I used a plumb bob on each end and C-clamps to hold the rear spars and make sure the wings were straight. They appear to have no twist. I'll know for sure in a month or so.

John,

When the time comes to hang the skeleton onto the posts/jigs, I'd be happy to come over and lend a hand making sure everything is straight with you.

From your most recent pictures, it now looks like your well on your way to getting it setup properly.

Dave,

Thanks... I was really counting on you to help me "fine tune" this sucker. That is your forte'! You are the KING of PRECISE!

I finally have something to show for all my efforts!

Thermos, maybe this coming weekend we can make an attempt on your pneu squeeze?

WS, care to come over then? I don't leave for HFD until Monday AM.

Let's talk.

Next weekend, I'll be at the 2nd Mattituck engine build demo. The wife and I are leaving Friday afterwork, and plan to stay overnight Friday and Saturday. We will return after breakfast on Sunday, unless the weather forces a Saturday evening departure.

I'll check in with you guys Sunday when I'm back, and if your around, then sure I'll stop by.
