I am shocked as to how the RV12 consistently is the top airplane in flight. Flight schools would be my guess?

yep, the RV-12 is getting it done. the other models don't fly much. I will keep tabs on it through the year.

what's airborne at 12:20 PM EDT on a Tuesday?

14 RV12 Van's RV-12
3 RV8 Van's RV-8
2 RV10 Van's RV-10
1 RV6 Van's RV-6
1 RV7 Van's RV-7

69 C150 Cessna Commuter
68 S22T Cirrus SR22 Turbo
60 SR20 Cirrus SR-20
50 M20P Mooney M-20

if you are flying your RV, most likely you are the only one airborne of that type, except for the RV-12.

perhaps configuring the engine to be close to 99 percent of what's flying would be a good idea?

I believe the numbers reported by Flightaware are not a true representation of the actual numbers of RV’s in the air. For example, very few experimental aircraft on Flightaware have the type associated with the N number .
Many RV’s in my local area flying regularly and they do not show up on Flightaware type page because the type is not listed, they only show up by entering the N number.

that could explain why we don't see many. also, they may not report if the flight is local and under 30 minutes, or other cutoffs.

when I was going into Cleveland last week, I called for flight following and they automatically knew my type. that was the first time that I recall them knowing that.
