Building status ?

Post by Spike »

The holiday's seem to have taken its toll on our progress lately. What have you guys been working on? Made any status? I have just finished up some software stuff here and am continuing to work on the workshop. I should be playing with aluminum soon! Yay! Anyone bought anything cool lately?

I received the Rolo tube flare tool and tubing bender yesterday and went right down to the shop to try them out. They are way awesome! Other than that nothing going at the shop. I have, in what spare time I get with my regular duties at the cat hospital,(I used to live in the upstairs of a cat house :-). ) been working on an RV web site of my own. But progress on that front is bloody slow. Nothing I want the world to see just yet. So yes I too have fallen victim to the holiday season with very little getting done on my pet project. Ya'll have a good holiday now ya hear.

I hear you on the holidays slowing building progress. I did manage to get my right wing caught up to the left wing. Just finished riveting on the right leading edge to the main spar.

Tested the left tank. Initial testing revealed a leak around one of the inspection plate screws. I will probably fix it tomorrow before i go to the chapter's Christmas party site prep.

Also, I went flying today! Took the old Cessna up to KLEW. Antony, I was gonna call ya, but it was spur of the moment.

2.3 hours round trip right over Boston both ways. 5,500' up and 4,500' back.

Good time spent! Plane worked fine.

It's all over but the flying! 800+ hours in only 3 years!

Today marked the 102 nd. anaversary of the Wright Brothers first flight. So a group of us EAA'rs made a loose formation flight over the city. I took our outgoing president for his first flight in a homebuilt a/c. He haden't been subjected to a roll in an airplane - - - until today. Yes, when we came back, he had a bright sparkle in his eyes and a great big RV grin on his face he cannot wipe off!!. I think his wife might be a little bit mad at me!
It waws fun!!!!

I've finished the ailerons and flaps; both rear spars are done and all ribs are fluted and primed.
I can't start the wing jig / skeleton until I finish the workshop and get moved (spike and I are in the same boat... :) ) so in the meantime I'm deburring and prepping all the parts I can for the tanks, etc.
No new toys recently altho I did start filling out the fuse order form...

i'm just slow now because i am waiting on the wings. i have been working slowly on the fiberglass tips, but i don't want to get ahead of myself by getting them all in place before my tech advisor comes by to inspect my work. as soon as that happens, i'll be movin' on!

i have also been doing A LOT of charter flying lately. had a cool trip today to cleveland hopkins. we took the head coach of a major big ten football team on a recruitment trip!! the airplane has flown more in the last three weeks than it has in the last five months!! i'm gettin' tired, and the shop is cold right now...still need that heater! :bang:

Chad, you could probably finish the horizontal tips but do not finish the rudder tips until you have figured out your wiring path for the tail strobe and position light, should you choose to use them.

i thought of that as i was riveting the top tip on the rudder in place. i put the bottom cap aside, and i'll figure that one out later. i am planning on using a full lighting system, so i'll need to be thinking well ahead at several stages of construction.

thanks! :)
