Elippse Prop

Post by cjensen »

Thought I'd start a new thread on the Elippse prop to try and keep this prop and the BiCambered stuff seperate, even though the new Elippse prop to be built this spring will have BCT.

This is an email I got from Fred this morning regarding production of Paul's prop, and how it is intended to be used-
Chad,

We don't have all the answers yet. The Elipps we built, which you read
about, is a three blade, fiberglass coated prop for the 150 horse power
RV-6. It performed as well as a 160 horse.
Price was nearly $3,500 because it was three blade, the Elipps design
requires a difficult airfoil, and the fiberglass work added much labor. It
is a racing product, not a sport pilot friendly type of product. The tips
are extremely fragile and though it performs ok for take-off and climb it
could be better for heavy, high density altitude take-offs.
I am currently building another two blade prop of Elipps design for testing
this spring. It incorporates our Bicamber technology and should allow use of
two blades, eliminate the need to fiberglass the entire blade, while
improving take-off and climb. If this prop does the things we hope and
retains the speed advantage of the Elipps we will offer it as a production
model.

Regards,
Fred Felix
So, for now, it's concept and built for racing.

Time will tell...

Vari-Prop (http://www.variprop.com/) was supposedly working on a CS or variable pitch prop with Elippse blades, but they don't have anything on their website, and I guess have been slow in getting any testing information back to Paul. It would be nice to have the choice to get a fixed pitch or CS version of the same prop :)

There was a good article in one of the last two or three issues of Contact! about the Vari Prop CS Elippse. It might be on the net somewhere, but I'm too tired to look for it tonight...

Issue #89, July-August 2007. If you have the issue, is there any way you could scan the article and email it to me? :)

Hey Chad,

As long as you're doing that, is there any way to post it for the rest of us to see? Or send me one as well?

Thanks, man!

For those who don't know or haven't seen it yet, there's an excellent article by Paul Lipps in EAA's Homebuilders e-newsletter, Experimenter, about his prop. After reading it, I want one!

http://www.eaa.org/experimenter/article ... lippse.asp

I wrote to Paul, and he was nice enough to write back and refer me to Jim Smith, who is handling development and marketing for the Elippse prop for RV's. He has one flying on his RV-6. Jim wrote back to me. Here's what he says:

"Hi Bruce,
Jim Smith checking in. Paul sent me your email of your inquiry about the Elippse propellers on the RV's. I'm flying the first other than Paul's and the Reno people. I've had mine since early Oct. 2007. This is my third prop and it's a keeper, very quite also. My engine is an O-320. Briefly these are the perfomance gains over the best of the other two props:
TOP SPEED 7.2% higher, ROC 7.6% better, CRUISE EFFICIENCY 6% better

I handle the marketing for the ELIPPSE propellers and will attempt to answer any further questions you may have, so fire right back."

Regards,
Jim

I wrote to him and asked a few questions, but I haven't heard back from him yet. I'm curious about the other two props he had before this one, which ones he's referring to.

If anyone is interested in emailing him, here's his email address:
