main wheel bearing races - pushing it

Post by A2022 »

getting new rotors, as these are .163 inch, below the .167 minimum. the old rotors are not warped and other than being grooved, don't show heat distress. I have been happy with them. however, for $100 cheaper, I am trying the Rapco brand. we will see if they are as good.

bearing races are at the end of their life and show skidding effects. I have new races; however, I am pushing them on to see what happens. I didn't get much debris from the bearings when I pushed the grease thru. I am thinking about slotting the axel cotter pin hole in order to keep proper compression on these wheel bearing. I believe I could slot it with a Dremel tool. when the bearings wear, the nut should be tightened but the cotter pin does not pass. this bearing should be trash in another 100 flying hours. I always use three new long bolts for the wheels if the bolts are removed.

original buna brake caliper o-rings. I have replacements but I'll let the original go for a while as they show no adverse effects. I drain some (brake fluid one reservoir amount) at each wheel service. I did not find any debris or water and the fluid was clear. remember to refill the reservoir by putting a strip of tape on it.

tire wear was even, and they did not need to be swapped, about 250 hours. I run 55 psi on the mains and let them leak back to 35 over a year.

our runway and taxi ways are getting a 3.4-million-dollar makeover. so, I'm OK with being down for a while.

perfect temps today for working the hangar. what a pleasure.

I decided to go ahead and slot the main wheel axel cotter pin locations in order to be able to tighten the nut and snug up the tapered roller bearings. it didn't need much slotting. as the bearings wear the original cotter pin location would not all the nut to be tightened properly. as I was told and believe, you need the bearing to be snug so that you have about one wheel rotation with hand spinning. I have that now back to original installed tightness. hopefully, this will reduce bearing skidding.

my cotter pin install method:
1. sharpen a wheel cotter pin
2. install and spread it
3. snip off the excess so it is not able to rub the wheel if it rotates
