Back in time - RV6 accident review - N352JB

Post by A2022 »

result = pilot and CFI burned alive.... and that would not be fun.

well, a couple of things with this one:
1) low time pilot
2) tail dragger, more difficult to control direction on the ground
3) wooded area runway, no margin for error
4) inability to egress from aircraft in what appears to be a very survivable accident

unable to understand why they could not get out. perhaps the canopy was pinched upon impact and became fixed. unable to determine if this was a tip up or slider canopy. hey, have multiple methods to release the canopy: a normal release method, a secondary release method, some method to break the canopy and extract yourself. if you tape the canopy on a tip up to prevent rain ingress, make sure you would be able break thru it upon fwd hinge release in order to escape. in my case, I believe I would need to roll onto my back while holding the canopy release pull lever, and kick with my feet.

The pilot was anxious about flying the airplane and had elected to hire a flight instructor for further training. According to a witness, the airplane taxied from the hangar to the end of the runway. The airplane remained at the departure end of the runway for several minutes consistent with performing a before-takeoff check. The airplane initiated a takeoff roll and shortly thereafter veered off of the runway to the left. The airplane then struck several trees head on and was immediately engulfed in flames. An examination of the airplane, engine, and related systems revealed no anomalies that would have affected the takeoff.

The New Orleans Coroner's Office performed autopsies on the pilots and determined both had survived the initial impact. The autopsy reports concluded that the cause of death was "partial incineration from fire secondary to (the) airplane crash."
