I just got going on my emp very recently. I took one of my hs-609 pieces to a weekly get together some local builders have here, and, well, they think I was over doing my edge and surface finishing just a wee bit. The plans said polish it with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, so I did ... wet, .... yeah it turned out, "polished" :) .

I couldn't leave the second one with less of a finish, so I did it the same way and will know better the next time.

That's the same finish I've been putting on all my parts and yes it's a little over the top. Think I'll keep doing it though. :)

Don,

Keep up the great work... When it comes to spars you don't want to do it shabby and shortcutted. Do it like those first pieces, take pride in what you build, and build it to the best of your ability.

Granted, we are not building swiss watches, but we should strive to build them as good as we can.

I dont think there is ever such a thing as too good of a job. There is adaquate and inadaquate, but never too good. Do it the way you want to.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be a smartbutt. Was just currious. So far I didn't like the bend in the left elevator and the left aileron, so I replaced the skins on both. We all have our tolerances on what we want in our airplane. Heck the other day I wasn't paying attention and hit a revit on an angle, ratttatttaattt down the side, oh well, body filler time when done on that one. That piece that you polished up should get the good ol' primer, so I guess your polish will be gone when completed. Oh well, your having fun, and that's more important than anything else at this point. Keep up the good work and have fun.

No problem Steve, in fact your comment was exactly what I was expecting. If I spent that kind of effort on every part, it would take me 20 years to build this thing. A lot of the problem was being the first part I really did anything with I was really taking my time, the second one took about half as much time. After hearing all these comments, it makes me feel better about the effort I put into it, at least I know there won't be any stress mark issues on those parts. I question the reason for getting a nice smooth 400 grit finish if you are going to scuff it up with scotchbrite before priming, but I guess any imperfections show up real easy with a good finish and therefore are easier to get rid of, and I did have some pin holes in the surface. In all honesty, I expect this is a five year project for me given the amount of time I have available and the 'pace' I finish parts at.

Here is one of those pin holes I saw part way through my polishing that I would not likely have seen had I not done the polished finish.

I was going to use bandsaw to put the radius on the end, but I ended up using a vixen file and then this setup to do the final rounding. I will be very careful the first time I use the bandsaw, thanks for the warning, mine still needs to be put together as I just got it.

Good Call Don!

Ken from Van's lent me some advice when I called about the 400 grit question on the spar stiffeners. He said, "...remember, you're building a tractor, not a watch!"
