Thank goodness for oops rivets

Post by svanarts »

It was a dark and stormy night... well actually it is here in sunny California. So I thought I'd share a little progress. I riveted most of the horizontal stabilizer together today. I munged one rivet up pretty good so I drilled it out. Except that I had smashed it so the diameter of the rivet and it's associated hole enlarged slightly. Oops. Exactly! I needed an oops rivet and happened to have exactly one left. These little guys are great. Drilled the hole out to #30 and riveted that little bugger in. Ended up looking just fine. Can you spot it?

If you guessed this one you're right!

I did guess ... but only because the rivet is a different color. Otherwise it looks great!

Yep. And you'll never see it once it's painted. Just wanted to throw that out there for folks who agonize over mistakes. Just fix 'em best you can and move one.

Scott, I've seen enough of them that I recognized it right away.

They are handy.

I have one "oops" type rivet on the bottom of one of my fuel tanks ... got distracted by the TV while dimpling the skin for the stiffeners and missed the hole. Drilled it out to #30 and put a -4 rivet in there. Not nearly as noticeable as I had feared ... once it is painted no one will ever know. (If they're looking THAT closely there will be plenty of other things to see!)
