We have a tailcone!

Post by cjensen »

Thought I'd post a status shot of where I left off last night...

Image

This was one of the coolest points of building thus far! I thought I'd get past this part without any of those "Wow, this IS an airplane!" feelings, but I didn't. Especially when Brit came home last night when I had just cleco'd this together, and SHE said "That's cool!"

Something about the fuselage that really makes it hit home, this really is an aircraft. There is a guy in town within a few months of finishing his rv7 fuselage, and seeing it up close is really inspirational, so I can only imagine what it must be like to be actually working on your own Chad, way to go.

Way to go bud! It sure is nice seeing that fuse sitting on sawhorses rather than upside down on a jig. Get used to your fuse, that's were I recall spending about 3 years of my almost 5 year build time on the RV-4. Seems like I spent most of that time hanging upside down over the side rails of my cockpit. Not an awe-inspiring site. :puke:

VERY nice Chad

I think I know what ya mean about Brit's comment. Denise doesn't check out the project much, but when she does and makes a comment like that, it really means a lot to me.

Excellent Chad!!!
I remember when we were working on the tanks at the same time...
Now I just look at my wings (still in the jig), bow my head down, & think "I'm not worthy".....

You're an inspiration to us all!! 8)

Aww...shucks Lorin...that was nice. Thanks.

Will, you're right man! That completely made my day, and it was 10:30 at night!

Here's a slightly updated pic with the 706 bulkhead in place-

Image

CJ, you had told me over the phone one to not dimple the 706 bulkhead yet. I wrote it down on my board, but without explaination. I think we got distracted with another topic when you mentioned that. Care to share?

Chad, yah...

hold off on dimpling the 706 AND SKIN until the forward skins are attached. This will allow for a more accurate match drill and better nesting.

Okay, so...the rest of the aft structure can be assembled/riveted, just hold off on the 706 ring until the forward skins are drilled. This is what you're saying?

Hey, that looks familiar!!

One piece of advise I'd like to pass along for others that are not yet to this point...When installing the aft tail section (711 and 712 bulkheads and 779 skin) and the 710 bulkhead, make sure you read in to the instructions and plans a bit and install the 710 BEFORE the 711/712/779 aft tail assembly! The instructions read like you install the assembly first, then the 710. Doesn't work that way as I found out...instead of taking the aft assembly off (which is in place with 40 or so clecos), I took enough clecos out of the forward 706 bulkhead to make it loose, and slide the J channels forward to allow the 710 bulkhead slide down in to place. It simply can't be coaxed in to position with the J channels in place. :bang: :bang:

Last night I made sure there was no twist in the tailcone with the plum bobs...

Image

Nothing difficult about this since the pre-punched holes pretty much take out the twist on their own. 8)
