Nose wheel bolt washers

Post by RVNewsletter »

I wasted my time on VAF trying to get an answer, I think I'll do better here. It looks like these are known as #8 hardened steel washers, but I can't believe Van's wouldn't include hardware. They sell them for 15 cents on their site, but after the $4 handling and the $8 freight, those are some might expensive washers:

DWG C1 the Nosewheel attachment Hardware exploded isometric view in the bottom right corner shows the hardware that goes with the bolt and it says:

062 25783054 Washer
2 places

I assume the 062 is the width of the washer but there is no 25783054 washer in the finishing kit bag list, nor is it included in the bag that has the nosewheel hardware in it.

Does anyone have a more standard identification for this particular washer.

Also it says

AN960-616 Washer
2 places

Judging by the drawing, I assume that should read "4 places".

Hi Bob,

I am not building a nosedragger, but I took a look at my C1 drawing to see if I couldn't help ya out.

The AN960-616 is indeed in 2 places, because there is a AN960-616L in the other 2 places.

As far as the missing $0.15 washer goes, I have had great luck calling up Van's and talking them out of the handling fee for little purchases like this. Also, opt for USPS priority shipping - it costs less than UPS and should get to you within 2-3 days!

I always have a list of things I need to buy from the various vendors - I keep track of it using Google Spreadsheets (http://docs.google.com). The nice thing about Google spreadsheets is it is online and I can add things to the shopping list when I am at home or work. Whenever I come across an item that I have to have right now, I buy everything from that one vendor that is on the list. That way I try to cut down shipping costs as much as possible. [/b]

Thanks, but... shoot. This was one of those items I wanted to "check off" this weekend. Granted, yesterday I made a two-page list of things that need doing on the plane, but this was the ONE I wanted to check off. :)

I really should get my head looked at.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake on the washers. Huge help, there!

As LUCK would have it, I walked across the field at the airport to visit with Mary and David Maib (RV10 builders), the only other souls at the airport today, when I told them about the washers and my frustration that (I assumed) all the hardware stores were closed.

"We just were at the Ace around the corner, they're open!"

Yeehah.

And they had the Grade 8 washers.

So I picked 'em up and then went back to the hangar and got a lot of work done, though the highlight was watching the CAF B-25 land, It must've been out doing some Memorial Day flyovers.

A few minutes later, a Harmon Rocket went screaming into the sky. I swear he was at altitude before the windsock halfway down the runway. I figure it was Doug Rozendaal, who flies the "Miss Mitchell" for CAF out of South St. Paul, but lives in Iowa.

That's a fun way to commute!

Be Sure to use enough Flat Washers on the Hex Screws!

Post by Bob Barrett »

Bob, if these washers are for the Internal hex head screws use to hold the wheel pants bracket on the nose wheel fork be sure to put in enough washers! I have two on each side of the nose wheel fork and that is not enough. I will probably end up with four on each side! I just put the new nose wheel fork on last week and need to add washers. Without the wheel pants on the screws project 1/4" to 3/8" towards the nose wheel tire. If the nose wheel gets low on pressure the screws would rub right on the nose wheel! I will be putting at least two more grade #8 washers on each side. Ideally in my mind only about one thread of each screw should be exposed on the tire sides of the fork.
