Flap - Fuselage clearance - how much?

Post by BSwayze »

I'm currently fitting the flaps and enlarging the hole in the fuselage for the flap push rod. I've looked all through my drawings and the plans, and I can't find any notes about how much clearance to trim for on the inboard end of the flap where it meets up with the fuselage. Mine fit extremely close before trimming. Once again, I'm very impressed with the engineering in these kits, how well everything fits. There's no rubbing or anything detrimental going on, but it seems to me there should be a bit more clearance. Did I miss it somewhere in the plans? Or is this okay.

How have some of you finished this? Did you trim it, and how much clearance did you allow? Here's a picture as it is right now:

Here's my gap picture from last year. I recall researching this same question back then, but don't remember where I got the info for the gap. I'll be doing the final flap hook up today, so can snap a new painted pic is you want.

I went with 3/32" gap to allow for a but of flex (really? ) and paint.

My flap gap is about 1/8" of an inch if I remember correctly. 3/32" may be adequate. Don't make it to big. A firend of mine made his wider and ended up riveting some angle to close the gap when the flaps are up.

Thank you, gentlemen, for your help!

I trimmed it a bit and it came in just shy of 3/32". About 5/64" actually. I'm pleased with it now. I hope this is adequate.

Just for the fun of it, here's my flap all the way down. I have the hole for the pushrod opened up just right now.
