Nutplate interference

This little cutout is necessary on the 7 & 8 aileron end ribs for proper nutplate clearance!

It came out pretty good if I do say so myself!

I saw that on Dan C's site.
Didn't have to do it on mine, though - it cleared fine... not sure if I have any pics (I'm at work now).

Yah, the plans are in the shop. I forget how they word it, but they say something about it being a potential issue.

I think it is a case of "close enough" on Van's behalf. It isn't a big issue and there is no sense redesigning. This works just fine.

that is strange...i'm curious about mine now. but, i'm quite a ways from the aileron construction.

I didn't have any clearance issues on mine either. I think when Dan C did his they were right in the middle of transitioning to using the nut plate. His plans did show a cut out so you could get a wrench in to tighten the nut. With the nutplate it shouldn't be necessary.

The plans show both methods currently. Mine was sooooo close to making it, I erred to the side of caution.

It is the instructions that refer only to the nutplate metod. I can't imagine attempting to wiggle a nut in there in the first place! I know my nuts wouldn't fit!

Note: I step drilled the leading edge skin to counterbalance holes with a 3/32" bit, then a 1/8" bit and finally opened it up to a #30.

I did this for two reasons. One, so I wouldn't kill my #30. Two, if the bit wanders, you will still have room to open it up and make the hole clean.

Both things happened! The 3/32" bit got bent and dull, but is easily replaced at HFD and while drilling the center hole it did a significant amount of wobbling!

Good idea and I am glad I did it!

Now I need to gather my thoughts at the health club, take this stuff all apart, debur, dimple and prime! That should take most of the weekend!
