Cowling dimensions
Cowling dimensions
jumping ahead of myself here, but can somebody give me the dimensions of the -7/7A cowl from the firewall to the nose? just curious of the difference between the stock cowl and the sam james.

According to Dick Martin, the full Sam James cowl (one with the real speed advantage) requires a 4" prop extension. He makes a cowl that will fit with van's current dimensions but it isn't as aerodynamic...

It will answer a lot of questions even down to what you can delete from your finish kit from Van's.
...I am ABSOLUTELY going this route after speaking to Dick Martin. The total cost difference after you delete the Van's parts from the finish kit is about $1000! ...some of the cheapest speed you can buy!

James cowl
Thanks for asking this question Chad. I had heard the term "James cowl" but had no idea what it was. This post has filled me in.
I will have to read up on it some more. My big concern would be that a 4" prop extension would create more wear and tear on the engine.

yeah, i've done all the reading on the james site. some of alternative engines that i'm looking at don't require the 4" extension. i plan to use a james cowl regardless, but i'm curious if the difference between cowl lengths is just the 4 inches.N200PF wrote:Chad -

don't worry about wear and tear antony. take a look at a new 172 (maybe even some older ones). they all have prop extensions to the tune of about 4". the extension is usually solid, and is purpose built.aparchment wrote:Thanks for asking this question Chad.
