Minimum edge violated

Post by prestwich »

I've bought two new nose ribs for my horizontal stabilizer now, at different times for different reasons. So this is my third one, and I'm way too close to the edge on one hole.

Please vote:

A -- build on!
B -- buy another damn rib
C -- put in a third hole in the middle

Jon, Definately C.

I have a HS main rib with 4 holes in it.

Here is a pic of the little misalignment trick I did:

None for me tonight. I am building!!! It is amazing how those stiffeners just SOAK up the hours!!! It too me four hours to cut and prep 32 of those little buggers!!!

I also got my ailerons deburred and ready for assembly.

Now, tomorrow night is another thing! My CFI's band is playing at a local establishment and I plan on checking out the scene. They play a mix of 70's, 80's and 90's and I just may have a few then!

I did the same thing on my HS. I called up Van's and they told me just to make another hole in the middle and not do anything with the hole that had edge distance issues.

Here is a link on my builders log to what I did:

If it makes you feel any better...I did the exact same thing (even including buying the additional parts. I had a long conversation with Vans and the answer is build on. As I recall they indicated that there is so little of the load carried here that I sould not worry about it. If you feel better...sink another rivet. There are so many other rivets holding the part in place that there is little to worry about according to my conversation with Van's. Rest assured that there are others that have walked the same path...It is all part of the learning curve.

So far I've replaced two parts. That rib is one of them and edge clearance on that flange was the reason. I didn't talk to anyone I just replaced it. Now I see I probably had nothing to worry about. Oh well live and learn.

I replaced that one also. Later I was told that edge distance is measured from the center of the hole to the edge and should be 1 1/2 the diameter of the rivet. In other words, one rivet diameter from the edge of the hole to the edge of the material. HAd I known that I would have been okay, I was thinking it was 1 1/2 from edge to edge. Live and learn.

It's 2 x diameter

Post by az_gila »

OK... but I have to correct this error.

The FAA recommended (AC43.13-1B - section 4-57) edge distance dimension is 2D - this is measured from center of the the hole to the edge.

The rivet Mil-Spec - on my web site at
http://home.earthlink.net/~gilalex/RV/
gives some exact dimensions, but are essentially the 2 D. To use these spec. dimensions would require some accurate measuring tools and techniques. This spec. would allow 0.031 inch less edge distance for a 1/8 rivet, but this is probably within our usual measuring error.

John R's original thought was correct. It's 1 1/2 diam. from the hole edge to the metal edge.
Whoever gave him the 1 diameter number was just plain wrong.

As always, you should check your copy of the bible (AC43.13-1B) for actual numbers, not just take stuff on hearsay....

Unfortunately, this is the third major factual error I've found on RV lists posting in the last few weeks. Check where your data comes from... :!:

That is an unfortunate reality of publications, regardless of form, and with all of them you need to verify information taken. I do find though that the benefit of online information sharing can very much out shine the pitfalls. As with everything, verify, and ask ask ask. Thanx for reminder that everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt. And welcome to the group!

Sorry for posting anything that might have been misleading. I do believe I was told that by a Van's employee when asking about my second part which was still seemed a little close. It did meet the 1 1/2 rule edge to edge though.

Live and learn. Thanks for the correction Gil.
