What's the downside of building the wings last?

Post by svanarts »

A poster on the other forum brought up a good point. So I'd like to ask the nicest RV guys on the planet :grouphug: for their opinion:

What's the downside of building the fuselage before the wings? :goodevil:
Since our RV7's are match holed, does it matter which you build first? :dunno:

I'm thinking build a slow build fuselage and then when I'm done, quick-build wings.

For an experienced builder, I can't see a disadvantage.

I say this because the plans are written with an increasing complexity and vagueness the farther along you progress in the kit.

I am not sure Van will even sell the compoents in this order, will they?

Give it a try!

I don't think this would be a problem if you order both the wings and the fuse at the same time. Reason being is that you can't get the spar carry through section with out the wings because they are a match drilled set. I think you build up that carry through section fairly early on in the fuse build. So, if I am recalling correctly on this very same question I asked last year around this time, I was told this was the reason you can't. :dunno:

Also, the Fuse longerons come in the wing kit.

Good points. The other poster who is building an RV8 checked with Van's and they told him no problem. Of course he could have been talking to Gary the night janitor, who knows? I forgot about the longerons. I guess Van's could ship them in a 15' long tube. :)
