Moved wings to the airport!

Post by cjensen »

Well, with my fuselage on the way in January, I needed to make some room in the garage. A good friend of mine has allowed me to keep my wings in his hanger/home at his airport until I need them again. The plan right now is to mount the wings to the fuse and do the first flight out of his airport as well. Here's some shots of the last coupla days...

It's weird having all that extra space in the garage again!

...well you won't have the space for long Chad!!!

Your wings look GREAT! It must be a great feeling to have them done, on the wall, mounted like a trophy! ...mine are just coming out of the boxes. :(

Chad, that is really cool! Nice to have the extra room, I am sure!

But, what if you want to change something? You might want to take the skins off and cover them with Poly-Fiber or something! I hear that they would be ALOT lighter that way!

Seriously, good move! I think that this summer I may bring mine to the school, paint them and possibly bring them to the airport. It would certainly be nice to get them out of the shop, but I would also like the option of setting incedence here at the house.

Besides, having a complete airplane in the driveway would make the neighbors wonder if I was going to launch it in the street!

Hmmm, maybe a high speed taxi run down the street would be fun! The kids on skateboards would get out of the way fast!

I like the wall mounts you guys came up with. Pretty slick. You might want to make sure that A/C doesn't drip water on them though.

I'm with CJ, I have a 3 car garage and plan on parking the fuselage in the middle bay so I can mount the wings. I want to keep my project at the house as close to the first flight as possible. I still haven't had any luck finding a hangar for sell and can't see paying $265 a month for a hangar when I can do the work from the comfort of home.

Thanks! Those are stone simple, and took me all of two hours to make four of 'em. They are 6 foot 2x6's, one inch particle board for the cradle, and 2x4's on each side of the particle board. Three inch drywall/multi purpose screws were used to put it all together. 4 foot bungees are attached to 13/16" eye screws.

Good catch on the AC Bill!! I didn't even notice that! Jack had his wings mounted in the same place when he was building his, so I don't THINK this will be a problem, but I WILL mention it to him...

With my two and half car garage, I don't quite have the room to put the wings on at home, so it's going to be done at Jack's place. I'll move the fuse down there when I get everything I can possibly get done here at home. I think my wings are gonna collect some dust over the next few years...

Those wing tips look great Chad. I still have that to look forward to.

Look like a good safe place to store the wings. Less chance of dinging them there than in the shop probably.

Thanks! I'm REALLY happy with how the tips turned out! Still have some filling to do over the area that was sanded away, and need to cover the pop rivets I used to install the rear close out ribs.

I had to jump at this opportunity to keep 'em at his house. I thought the exact same thing, John, about dinging them. I'm 100% POSITIVE I would have dinged them in my garage at some point.

Chad-

Is that Jack the RV-7 guy you flew with to the ice cream fly in? What other planes does he have out there? Is it a private strip or a fly-in community type setting?

Yep! That's the Jack with the yellow and white RV-7. The RV-7 is the only one that is his (right now...). He has a friend with a couple of airplanes (C182 and C172) hangered there while he's waiting to sell one (C172), and get a hanger for the other (C182) at his home airport. Usually it's just Jack's -7 in there.

It's a private strip, but with two runways (18-36 and 11-29). We have a fly-in there every summer in June, and you're ALL welcome to come! We have a group of pilots here that really want to start and build a fly-in community (his airport is one of the possible sites), but our local county government makes it supremely difficult to make it financially feasible right now.

Must be hard to see them move away from home after spending all that time with them, but it doesn't look like you could ask for a better place for them to live until they are needed. The sure do look nice.

Great way to store the wings. I was wondering how I was going to do it. I'm just finishing the wings, bottom skins and tanks. My fuse kit is being shipped this week, so I have plenty to get done in the next couple weeks.

Just a quick update...we did move the right wing to another wall to avoid that AC unit. That would've sucked to find out the hard way that that was the wrong spot to hang 'em... 8)
