Thanks for the info:
I was thinking of using a shipper who has a special trailer to move the quick build kits. The feus and wings in that case are on dollies and not crated as Van does normally so you can avoid that expense but you would still need quite a long van or truck. I am going to try to get him on the phone tomorrow and see what he recomends Cheers g

Everyone says that Tony Partain does a fine job!

Antony Parch was going to use him, but it was cost prohibitive for him being in Maine and all.

Gary, where are you located?

not cost, location

Post by aparchment »

Actually cost wasn't the issue, location was.

Tony doesn't deliver this far north.

Tony did end up delivering my QB fuse to Oshkosh where I picked it up. He is a great guy and really went out of his way to work the shipping out for me.

Yeah, I am thinking about asking Tony to bring it up to Blaine, Wa. I am 45 minutes from there in Pitt Meadows BC , Canada and will cross the border and pick it up from there. Tony doesn't cross the border. He uses a system of dollies to avoid the crating but I will need to have some stuff in place to safely get it back to Canada. I think I am going to need a truck with at least 20 feet to take the length of the fueselage and i figure 2 helpers would be a good idea. My Xmas present to me. I know severalRV folks have had Tony move their stuff and they are all very happy with his service. Then I figure I will manage the border crossing and the root canal with the feds/customs guys. thanks for your advice Gary

crossing the border

Post by aparchment »

Gary:

I actually crossed the Canadian border with my plane. I didn't intend to, but the road wasn't well marked, and there was no way to get off the Niagara Falls bridge without crossing.

The Canadians gave me a hard time about establishing the value of the plane and wanting me to prove that I wasn't going to sell it in Canada, and the Americans wanted to know why I was bringing a rental truck with a small aircraft into the US. One idiot US border guard asked me "you mean you have 10,000 to spend on an airplane." Ummm, first how much do you think airplanes cost, and second, what business is that of yours? Boy was that a fun trip to Niagara Falls.

That's my long-winded way of saying be prepared to answer some questions, bring lots of documentation and be patient.

Antony, Like you I always look forward to dealing with the border guys. I am in BC and will cross at Blaine just south of Vancouver. Van's tells me that they send alot of stuff accross at this border and the customs guys are "sort of" familiar with the RV stuff tho I agree with you in that you need to have everything documented, prices invoices etc. I never look forward to crossing the border tho I fly accross in my cessna alot and that hasn't ever been a problem. A rented U-haul with a bunch of aluminum might be another question. Did you truck the quick build kit?? G

trucking

Post by aparchment »

Gary:

I did truck my QB fuse from Oshkosh to Maine. I rented a Penske truck. Though the truck was big enough, because the kit weighed next to nothing, the truck bounced around a lot on the way home. It was a rough and noisy ride. I actually wore my noise cancelling headsets while driving (a small pair of Sennheisers, not my aviation headset). My kit was well secured in the back, sitting on padding and tied to the side rails. The plane and related parts didn't move at all on the way home. I wish I could say the same for my kidneys!

truck

Post by aparchment »

Gary:

Sorry for the delay. I just saw your question. The QB fuse is only 14.5 feet long, so 20 feet is more than enough. I used a 20 foot truck as well and used the extra space for the fuse parts box and my luggage coming back from Oshkosh. I certainly didn't need the space though.

Please feel free to call if you have any questions. PM or email me for my number.
