rudder pedal placement

Post by gsimatos »

So I am sitting in the fuselage on a cusion making airplane noise and reading the consruction manual regarding placement of the rudder pedal assemblies. I understand you need to consider how long your legs are etc but I am sure some of you guys have gone thru this step. Are there any special issues to consider in locating the pedals?? Travel, clearance from the firewall those kinda issues?? I will look forward to your comments Gary

They say to drill a series of holes now. Otherwise it is really hard to change placement later... should you desire.

Gary,
There is a minimum distance from the firewall to locate the first hole. It is specified in the plans. I would cleco the center bracket in place with its bearing block and test fit the rudder pedals at various locations. I didn't and wound up having an additional hole, maybe two that cannot be used on the side longerons. The issue is with the length the center support extends from the firewall. The center bracket bearing block becomes the aft limiting point you can place the pedals unless you modify this. If you locate the pedals aft enough you would run off the center bracket. A few extra holes are not a big deal, but the holes were not the easiest to drill on a QB. if you are a slow build and haven't riveted the skins, pull the longerons off and drill them out of the aircraft after they are marked. Hope this helps.

Thanks you guys. This one of those things once you do it, it is hard to go back and adjust and I hate the idea of extra holes in the longeron that ultimately serve no purpose. I see the minimum from the fire wall distance of 3 inches now on the plan. I have the QB fuse and think it is time to get one of those angle drills to place these holes. The center support I guess could be left long til the final placement is made as well. My old flying instructor used to say "you will not have time enough to make every mistake so you should try to learn for mistakes of others" if ya know what I mean. I find building these thing you just don't know what will happen until ya actually got the tools in hand so being able to dicsuss it with you all is a terrific help to me and my 2 left hands. Thanks again G

Me again, one other thing. I got 2 rudder pedals # F-6117 not 4 as I sort of expected. The 2 pedals on the right are "extra order items" ?? Is that right? Gary

There is only one set of brake pedals in the standard kit. One must order passenger side brake pedals. The rudder pedals are the white weldment. My recommendation would be to drill the extra holes in the longerons. There does not seem to be any downside to this.

Good Luck
