Rivet callout HZstab 603-609

Post by CalKid »

As I use the gage it looks like the 470AD 4-6 per the plans will not result in a proper shop head. It looks short. The 470AD 4-7 however hits right at the top of the gage. Had to use a longer rivet for the 411 brackets as well. Is this a common issue with rivet call outs throughout the project? Advice appreciated.

Yeah, it happens.
I think the consensus is that Van's will err on the short side if the length is between two rivet sizes ... that way us amateurs won't tip the shop head over and mess it up.
I just check the rivets before bucking and used whatever size was best. The callouts on the plan were a rough guide. You can also cut rivets to 1/2 sizes or hold them in a pair of pliers and hit them with the sander to take just a little length off...

Just follow the one and a half diameter rule and you can't go wrong. Van's doesn't get all the call outs exactly right. Some of the bolts are slightly off also.
