Jim, I like it!

Nice and clean. Say, the placement of the steamers looks kinda random. What was the strategy there?

I would have placed them around the EFIS in the standard locations surrounding the artificial horizon. (ie. altimeter on the right and the VSI beneath that)

Nice job!

The thinking is the steam gauges are there for just in case. A person in the right seat can fly by them or just have something to look at (I'm nothing if not democratic). Swapping the AI page from the EFIS to the EMS gives a pretty good flight picture without a lot of clutter. The placement wasn't as random as it looks I was trying to keep a straight line across the top of the intruments on the right side. The EFIS sits higher on the panel cause I wanted space to get my big meat hooks into do the wiring below it. My VSI was thrown in since I had it available. I did give good long thought about the extra hole and how it threw the look off a bit. The panel to fire wall rib is being moved (tip up) to just right of the EFIS and three, so far, toggle switches will be to the right of that. I may include a clock in that area also. On the right side of the EMS I may include a magnetic compass but that depends on whether the EMS emits much of a magnetic field or not.

Speaking of panel progress, (hijacking Jim's thread here) I fitted mine to the fuse tonight.

I sat in the fuse for the first time tonight. I am a patient man.

CJ
So did it fit? I have not sat in mine yet but plan on trying it out in the next week or so.

Yours looks good to me but that Garmin looks a long way over there.

Willie, fuses here. I am thinking of putting the switches either across the top or on the left side. I am holding off because I hope to do a console and some may go in there. Plus I have the Infinity stick, so much is going on there. Dunno just yet.

John, It seemed to fit me well! I gotta say that I was pleasantly surprised at how much room there is. I am sure that it will start shrinking soon.

The 496 might find it's way closer. Dunno exactly where just yet. This is a preliminary planning stage!

Just sat in it now, wow, you are patient. As much as I really like symmetry, I think I would want instruments as close to the left as possible like in a car since it is unlikely I will fly from the right side. If it is important enough to be on the panel, I want it as easy to reach as practical, that is why I like the angled segmented instrument panel, makes the stuff on the right easier to use from the left seat. I have to remember to keep leaning over to check gages way on the right on the 172's I fly, you just can't see them in a normal scan. I do like the stuff you have on the panel.

CJ-

I like the layout. Very similar to mine. I gotta wonder why you are bothering to put in a Garmin 430? Your panel is obviously VFR since you have no backup instruments (other than the autopilot). The 496 has pretty much everything the 430 has minus the VOR receiver and the ability to do legal IFR GPS navigation. Why not save the bucks and go with a second comm unit, SL30 or a B&W GPS/Comm unit like the 300xl?

Other than that, looks great! Simple simple simple. Gotta love it.

Don, Oddly you mentioned moving as much stuff over as possible because tonight on my way into the house I moved the 496 over to the left hand side of the primary EFIS!

Hmmm, great minds... I guess?

Mike, this is a preliminary layout at best. I am planning marginal IFR with experimental IFR backups. What you don't see is the Dynon D10A on the right. That is what I consider essential if I am going to consider popping through layers in experimental mode. This way I will have a Primary EFIS, Backup EFIS and the AP with possibly an TruTrak ADI as an auxiliary mounted someplace.

I want the 430 for legal beagle work, but I am not sure it will make it into the panel at first mock up... as much as I would like it to! It may, I just dunno as yet.

If loot gets tight, I will go VFR for my airworthiness and modify it from there. Being a tip-up (as you know) it ain't that bad!

Just kinda wingin' it!

AAhhhhh...sounds like our panels are going to be very similar. Great minds think alike!

Go out of town for a little while and everyone thinks they can just steal a thread! 8) . That panel looks pretty good but where are the obligatory round gauges?

Image

Getting closer to plumbing and wiring mine. The left rib has been moved to the right in this shot. I've trimmed the original rib in order to leave space to attach adel clamps for tubing and wire.
