flap hinge install

Post by gsimatos »

I am hanging the flaps/hinge to the wing. I have the QB flaps so the rear half of the hinge is already in place on the flap. When I position the flap against the trailing edge of the wing, it doesn't look like I am going to have enough hinge width to safely make my holes. If I keep the trailing edge of the flap lined up with the aileron, it sure looks close to illegal. The plans call for a minimum edge distance of 3/16 which I assume is from the center of the hole to the forward edge of the hinge. I know a photo would be helpful here but the daughter disappeared to girl guides with the camera. Anyone got any ideas on this one?? Thanks G

This is a common problem. I think the wings ship with AN257-P3 piano hinge (it is stamped into the hinge)-- you probably need to order some AN257-P4 or P5, depending on how much distance you need to overcome. Aircraft spruce as well as Van's carry the wider hinge. ACS's link is http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/m ... ohinge.php and they tell you what the different P? values correspond to in width.

Good luck!

Yeah, Thats a good idea. I hate to have a step between the flap and aileron or not being happy with the edge distance for the rivets. A wider hinge would be the answer. Gotta love this RB site, Thanks for the quick reply too G

Like Mike said, a common problem. -4 is what you will need, not -5. -5 would be too wide and will interfere with the flap brace. Top pic here. Just be warned, the shipping will be 2X of what the hinge costs you.

Really? I ordered a bunch for my wingtips from ACS and the shipping wasn't that bad at all.

IIRC, the shipping on one 6' piece (cost $11), was over $20. $30+ for an $11 part sucks, but at least it is done right.

Yup. I just checked my spreadsheet, and I paid $63.36 total for four pieces of 6' hinge. $40 for the hinge (or thereabouts), and $20+ for shipping!
