panel work

Post by hydroguy2 »

Worked on my "purchase" list for a bit today. Got shivers from all the money it's going to take, so figured some shop time was in order.

The panel is coming along. Cut the Dynon hole today

And started mocking up the left side throttle and trim

That is an interesting throttle/trim setup.

Will the trim setup interfere with yer wrist while jockeying the throttle?

nope...unless I'm doing it wrong.
The trim will actually sit lower than it looks.

Last view with it empty.

I wasn't sure what to do with the labeling. I like the silk screen look, but finally decided on engraved vinyl for all the switches and breakers. Can't wait to start wiring.

Please don't burn your money, I'll send you a chunk of pine for every $100 you send me.

My panel purchasing is complete. I'm pretty frugal and have shopped the bargain bin for everything. My total panel cost is under $7500. I think the only thing I bought from a vendor new is the Vents from Steinair and the some of the switches/bkrs.

Does anyone have a favorite builder website that shows how all the electrical stuff is hooked up?

As an electrician, I'm a hell of a plumber.

Smitty,

Have you been to B and C Specialty's Website?

From there you can download a Z-13 diagram. That will keep you thinkin' for at least a few sessions on the can!

Thanks, CJ!

I'm with Smitty. I haven't had any education on electrical matters, and this is going to be very interesting, to say the least.

Thanks CJ!

Since my last posting, I did some investigating. Being the chicken that I am, I was intrigued by powered panels at Aircraft Spruce:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/el/powerpanels.html

Apparently these panels have everything built in. Just hook up the wires and Presto! Sounds too good to be true. I did some checking on VAF and found this:

http://www.vansairforce.com/community/s ... hp?t=49550

Looks like no one likes the "EXP BUS Mounting Tray" or the "Power Panels For Homebuilts", BUT they do like the "Vertical Power" stuff. It's no wonder then that the "Vertical Power" stuff cost three times as much as the other products.

"Dammit Maverick!"

Yup, VP is great stuff. Marc Ausman is a great guy. I have met him at OSH and he makes a great product.

I am going Z-13 because I am an old wireman. Those new tricks are just too fancy for me!

As cool as that product is, and I love technology (I do it for a living), I still look at the VP stuff as something cool looking for a problem to solve.

In my simple mind the VP system replaces two points of failure for each circuit (fuse/breaker and switch) with breakers and switches controlled by software. For me, it's just too complex for a system that should be simple and reliable. If they really are controlling trim, as that system diagram shows...well, that would make me nervous.

But I'd be happy to be proven wrong, because it's a neat idea...

Thermos,

I don't think that it controls trim. I think it just shows the TRIM SYSTEM as a connected load.

...but I could be wrong too!
