To-Do before engine?
Going to pick up my engine Friday, so need to get ready to hang it. SO:
Here's what my firewall looked like last night.
I hope to hang the engine next week, while my son is home from Afghanistan. IT got me thinking about hinge shims or camlock strips....and what else am I forgetting?

If you can figure out where to put them, I would get the control cable holes in there.
Make sure the rivet is drilled out and the nutplate installed where the clamp that will hold the breather tube goes.
Make sure you put the oil pressure fitting in the engine before mounting it.
The control cable for the heat box...
Penetrations for your engine monitor wiring, starter/master/shunt wiring and your main buss wire.
I ended up moving the fuel and oil pressure senders to the top two holes to prevent my oil cooler hose from rubbing on the bottom one.

I missed the breather tube nutplate.
Already got the buss/starter/shunt wiring in place. Was waiting on the engine wiring penetrations until engine is mounted to hopefully make a clean routing. Same with the throttle/mixture holes, since I'm probably going left side throttle. Good call on the sender manifold, I almost cut the top port off.

Its easy enough to punch holes in the firewall with a punchout hole kit for the control cables. Since you are going with a custom setup, I'd wait until you had everything measured out before putting in holes.
The only thing I would say is mandatory is putting on the propeller governor on the engine and torquing down all of the bolts. Everything else can be done with the engine on. While not all of it may be easy to access, it is possible to get at.

I'll get some better pictures when we unload it tomorrow. I left home yesterday at 9pm after a welcome home dinner for my son and round-tripped it to Colorado. 1400miles 20hrs drive time and only 3 hrs sleep in a rest stop and back in the garage at 9:30 tonight......i'm going to bed

CJ, I found a AFP unit that had <2hrs on it and saved a bunch. Apparently the guy didn't like how the hook-ups were on his engine, and switched to Silverhawk.
This was the first AFP install my builder had done. He said the install was painless with only minor adjustment of the mixture arm. AND the bonus: he said the engine is smooth across the whole RPM scale.

yep 30 yrs ago would have been easier. But while on the road, I felt like a teenager again on my first road trip. You're only as young as you feel!
The anticipation was thrilling. Our son was coming home form Afghanistan that day so I couldn't sleep the night before, so up at 5am. Big family gathering at the airport and dinner. Thermos of Coffee, a couple of Redbulls to go and I was on the road at 9pm and drove until 3am. crashed in Wyoming for 3hrs before pushing 4hrs to Ft Collins. an hour or so to load and yak. Left Ft collins at 11:30 and full power back to home by 9:30pm. I was pumped....until i got out of the jeep. Like I said you're only as young as you feel, so I felt 80 when I finally laid down.
Is's all good now, we hang the engine tomorrow
