Finally back in the shop

Post by hydroguy2 »

after an extended RV layoff, it feels good to actually accomplish something in the shop today.

Finished up some loose ends under the forward skin. Closed it out and now is ready to rivet down.

Also messed with the cowl hinges. the firewall upper hinges are really tight and I have not had good luck getting them to fully seat. 5 minutes with a file tapering the eyelets and then a few minutes with some 220 paper on the pins and things finally go together....Still pretty tight. So going to rivet the cowl hinges tonight also.

ha...I think some times we could just share the photos, since so many of them are similar.

Last night I was riveting the forward skin on...by myself...when I got to the aft corners and remembered I hadn't added a shim to hide the canopy edge eyebrows. Thought to self: slowdown bigboy

No pics, but got some nice battlescars from reaching thru a lightening hole with a poorly trimmed zip-tie lurking on the other side....oh well chicks dig scars.

Brian,

Some grease will help those hinge pins a little! I have greased mine a couple of times.

Thanks for the tip, Bob. I've used a bit of boelube. I'm trying to keep everything greaseless for now since I plan on being in the paint booth soon.

I think She is allergic to the shop. She's only been out there a few times since the build has started.

back at it also

After a month off for end of school stuff, then a 16 day vacation in our RV (Winnebago), I spent a whole night in the garage just staring at parts trying to remember where I left off.
Last 2 nights were spent getting the crotch strap brackets drilled and the center section deburred. Time to prime this weekend and then dimpling and riveting. I also need to move everything around in my garage to accommodate the ever lengthening fuselage.

BTW, we passed through Townsend, MT on the way from Yellowstone to Glacier. My wife and daughters wouldn't have let me stop and check out your airplane project... Beautiful country up there in the summer. Don't know if this SoCal native could handle the winters there!

riveted the forward skin on yesterday...well riveted as much as I could reach by myself. Today I decided to put the canopy in place. Installing a canopy solo is a real chore. and of course now that the skin is riveted, it seems to sit a touch higher than I recall.

It was a beautiful evening for flying tonight(or so it appeared). Even my unfinished airplane wanted to go, I snapped the pics with my phone before she could get to her wings at the airport.

Looking good Brian! What is your ETA? Are you going to paint the fuselage before you fly it? I had the fuselage painted, the wings painted, and the empenge painted by the time of the first flight but took the wing tips off this Winter, installed the lights, and had the gear leg fairings, wheel pants and wing tips painted. It collects fewer bugs now with the wheel paints painted.

Sometimes you just have stand back and look at these kits as they come together, they represent so much more than what you see in a picture. Nice work Brian, and what a peaceful looking place to be building.

ETA! should have it painted and at the airport by July 4th Fly-in 2010 for final assembly. :bang: or at least that was the prediction last March. Lost a couple months due to my work and family time. But still hope to get the fuselage painted in August and start putting her together.

I'm amazed at all the little stuff that I keep finding that I must finish before it goes to paint. The details where I deviated from the plans have really added to the hours lately.

I do have a nice place to build, but that also has it's issues. Kris gets home a few hours after myself and we enjoy BBQing and sitting on the porch watching the world go around.

Last night this fellow spent the evening eating apples 15' from our deck.
