That paint looks good. Is that paint booth at your home?

that's a build primer, most of it will be sanded off. but it really highlights the flaws when a dust coat is applied.

not my booth. I have a good friend down who owns a bodyshop and has allowed me some space & time. Also have recruited a couple helpers to do some of the prep work.

should start shooting some color later this week. :)

decisions, decisions

Post by hydroguy2 »

I never set out to build a show plane, so last night we discussed "how good is good enough?" At some point you need to ask yourself where between average and above average do I want it. While I have been striving to to the best I can all through the build, some times, good enough confronts you. We reached that point yesterday. The forward lip of the canopy sits about 1/16" proud of the forward skin (last year I tore the forward skin making it to tight) so not really happy with the fit but time to move on. Also decided for productivity reasons,I pulled all the tail apart. This should help with the finish and timing. I'm taking up space in a working business so it will be nice to get some of my stuff painted and out of there.

Here's the cowl installed this morning. i needed to check the fit of some of the horizontal lines and attachment of the upper fairings. Also opened the door to get some sunlight on it and found some more pinholes.

pushed back in the booth for protection. with the canopy removed and the tail off it appears i am going backwards in the build.

Monday update. Made some good progress today. All the primed parts have been wet sanded with 600 and only a couple pinholes were spotted. Hope to shoot some yellow tomorrow.

well don't hold your breath. Corky had parts for 3 cars(fender benders) come in yesterday. they worked on them until 2130 last night and one is in the booth now, another is ready and goes in the booth this afternoon. I go to back burner when the paying jobs need booth space. Tomorrow I have to work my Dam job, but they may still shoot some yellow with out me.

We dust the primed parts with some special powder that sticks. Then I take 600wet and sand it smooth. It really shows any flaws and leaves a surface smoother than a baby butt.

FINALLY

Post by hydroguy2 »

started shooting some color. We're shooting all the solid color pieces first to get them out of the shop.

This clear has an eight hour cure time. While this really helps with the gloss, it's no fun watching paint dry.
