oil cooler install

Post by hydroguy2 »

I'm finally finishing up some things under the cowl. One of those items is the oil cooler install. Does anyone out there have any pics or plans for an tilted mount. I have the James plenum and they recommend tilting it ~30* or something like that (I don't have any instructions).

Here's where I'm starting

The actual angle filler pieces will be simple enough, but kind of wondering about any other bracing or reinforcements needed.

Brian,

If you do not reinforce the poo out of that corner it will crack...

Mine cracked at <25hrs.

Maybe the plenum will help keep it more rigid in that corner?

There are a few pics floating around where people have mounted the cooler at the angle like you are.

If I had it to do over, I think I would investigate the firewall mount more.
If mine cracks now, the engine has departed the airplane !!!!

The photos are of Dick Martin's RV-8, he has been running this for setup over 10 years with no cracking or breakage.
The top mounting flange is reinforced with several layers of glass which adds
tremendous amount of strength to the assembly.
