What is the consensus is it better to mount the battery on the firewall or in the fuselage?

Battery Mount decision
RV7's tend to be more tail heavy than the other models empty (not sure what model your building). Take this into consideration for your choice.
Light prop and aft mounted battery could really be a problem with a 7.
I put it on the firewall since that was the standard Van plan and it was super easy to do.

As Brian said, the majority of RV-7's, if not all have firewall mounted batteries. In addition to just moving the weight of the battery from the firewall to the fuselage, you will have significantly more 2 gauge wire running to forward of the firewall. This contributes additional weight, plus the chance of a fire hazard if there was ever a short.
