Movin' along! Sika done and FWF kit ordered!

Post by captain_john »

Hey all,

Lemme tell ya, the whole Sikaflex thing is EASY! It is great to work with and a real non-event!

Today I also ordered my Firewall Forward kit. I had already collected mcuh of the necessary stuff so it was only $2,060! It shipped today.

It looks like I am officially back on track after my divorce now. It feels good!

also, can you point to any particular sika writeups that you used? I need to start making decisions on how I'm going to do the canopy...

I will post some "after" pics and an explanation later.

It is just like most stuff in the build... a real non-event. Nuttin' to it but ta do it!

The sika is awesome stuff though!

I only used it on the leading edge. It IS structural and "cushion-ey" if you will, unlike the fiberglass Van suggests.

I am glad I went with it!

Pics to follow.

Vlad, What you might have forgotten was the reason for my almost 3 year hiatus from building.

Before I got to know you, I was married. When I saw you out at OSH in 2008 (I think) I was just getting my divorce underway.

Since then, I have had a wild ride and for the past year and a half, Michele (of course you know her) has been very supportive of me building the plane. She wants it DONE! So do I!!!

We are doing quite well but no... we are not married. Here she is with me and another friend at a Halloween party last weekend.

Image

Yah, I do all right for an old guy! hahaha

Soooo, should I fix you up with a woman? I have one here waiting to meet you!

I will upload the sika pix tomorrow. I left the camera media in the garage and I am hitting the hay soon so that will have to wait. Besides, the pic of the girls will keep you hounds occupied until then!

NOT ONE comment about the girls!?!

Man, you guys ARE airplane nuts!!! hahaha

Anyways, as promised... Sikaflex pictures:

First, I traced the outline of the plexi onto the forward skin after painting it with my glareshield coating.

Image

I then scuffed, cleaned and primed both surfaces. The primer seems to be some kind of adhesion promoter. No big deal really. Some kind of black paint consistency and you just brush it on. Then I "DOOPED" if you will, a bead of Sikaflex 295 UV onto the surface and laid the bubble on top of it. I must admit, I did it alone but try to have somebody else there to help guide it onto the product. I got lucky is all. It is kinda like proseal in the way that if you get it onto anything else... good luck getting it off!!!

Image

I added another bead ahead of the bubble for added strength and aesthestics and "tooled" it for good looks. Put a little masking tape where you want the bead to end so that you can peel it off later and leave a nice clean bead behind.

Image

In the end, the product looks like a factory-made gasket! I might just doll it up with some sheet metal instead of going the fiberglass route! My Buddy Bill is a sheet metal wizard and he would probably be able to bend a really cool one piece fairing for the leading edge. If so, this would really get some attention at the fuel pumps!

Sooooo, whatcha think?

BTW, Mattituck got my engine order today. I ordered a 180 HP injected ECI engine with a Superior Forward Facing Sump.

That oughtta get things moving!!!

Brian, I am making good progress! OSH 2013 is a possibility.

I know that when my engine gets here in January my A&P IA friend (A.K.A. Speedpants) will be here and we will have the plumbing stuff done in a jiffy!!!

That's good 'cause I HATE plumbing!

Oh alright ... You are such a lucky joker CJ, bet the night flew by with all the bat wings wrapped around you.

I am really starting to like that method of canopy assembly, especially after seeing a number of cracked ones around screw holes, besides, it looks really good.

Looks like you only did the sikaflex on the forward portion of the canopy?
I'm planning on doing the entire tipup with no screw holes and sikaflex for all of the edges.

How does Sikaflex react to changing temperatures? A friend of mine had his canopy all cut and clecoed to the frame of his RV-6A and left it an unheated hanger here in Minnesota. In fact the same Hanger where my airplane has been since 2008. Anyhow he went to Texas come December like all the smarter people due. When he got back in the Spring some of the clecoes had let go and flown accross the hanger and the canopy had a serious crack in it! :bang: My friend ended up putting a second canopy on and made bigger rivet holes and screw holes etc. Needless to say my canopy has enlarged holes! Thereofe if you were to fly an airplane Sikaflex to Minnesota in January what would happen? :?

Vlad, See you when you come home. Stop by Hangar 5 along the way! We can put you up again!

Dave and Bruce, Yes... I am VERY pleased with the product! I have absolutely no reservations saying that this stuff IS structural and Bruce you could glue the whole thing in solidly. Noah in Newport, RI has done just that. I went with a blend of threaded fasteners and Sika and liked the product.

Bob, The elasticity of the Sika is better than the expansion characteristics of the canopy. If the canopy expands or contracts, I would eat my hat if the Sika wouldn't allow for it!

I don't know what happened in that Hangar in Minnesota but I can tell you that if I had this to do all over again, I wouldn't do it any differently!

I'm planning on doing my whole tip-up with SIKA, too, just like Bruce is doing. I've had a setback with a death in the family, but I'll be back at it here very soon.
