Hey, I've been hanging around here long enough to know that you can't be a truly full-fledged member of the group until you post a pic of the center bearing! Now I just need to figure out how to replace those big clunky clecos with some nice dainty rivets. I've got a fancy schmancy pneumatic squeezer, but how do I adjust the amount of squeeze? Thought I heard someone talking about an adjustable die holder or somethng like that?

HA! I never did post one of those pictures. Wonder what that makes me?

p-wich,
if you don't want to spend the $65 at avery to get the adjustable set holder (i haven't yet, seems like a lot of money for a little piece), just use washers to get the right spacing. or, i bought a full set of flush dies from the yard for like $15, and you can get most of 'em done that way, though i do still use washers when needed.
...i'm glad i'm in compliance with the center bearing pic regulation!

3/16 AN washers work just fine. I have been using them for a year now.
I can't wait for my adjustable set holder to arrive this week!
Someone SHOULD do a how-to on the pneu squeezer operations!
Chad, what are you doing tonight? Maybe you could whip something up?

I did come across this cool video, though!
http://www.ballofshame.com/flying/pneumatSqueezer.mpg
One thing I did learn about one day too late is that the pneu squeezer makes all its power at the top of the stroke.
When I forst got it, I thought it was broken. I took it apart and put it back together thinking I would see something wrong. No... I just didn't understand how to set it up.
Practice on junk metal. If not, whatever you practice on will soon be junk!
Also, keep in mind that you are spacing the washers so that at full squeeze the rivet is fully set. I know, this sounds like common sense. It seems that I am not that common.

Well, the pieces of the puzzle are finally beginning to come together. I finally ran across a photo of a flat rivet set set. *Now* I see that they make flat rivet sets with identical shafts and diameters, but bodies of different lengths. A set set. And washers for smaller incremental adjustment. Most vendors just have a tiny little picture of things lined up in a holder, and you can't see what they are!
The adjustable set still confuses me some because Avery doesn't have a photo on their website. Is this a threaded shaft that replaces the long one with the spring on it that goes down inside the riveter to contact the drive cam?
And I did finally, after days of searching, find a link to a video of how to adjust the pneumatic, but the sound doesn't work. No wonder Van's says building an airplane is frustrating!
I did realize that the correct adjustment would be to have a fully extended squeezer piston correspond to a fully set rivet, which makes me wonder why people even talk about where the squeezer develops the most force. You don't really have too much choice about that, right, you just set it for desired compressed rivet length and that's it?

...and the top of the stroke thing being the desired finish length, right on the money!
You are smarter than me!!!

This plane of yours is gonna be ok!
