Dimpling Gas Tank Ribs.

Post by Lyle »

I was reading on the building web sites where some have used a deeper dimple die on the gas tank ribs than the normal dimple dies. I E mailed van’s about this and they said it was not necessary. So, I dimpled the gas tank ribs and found that the skin dimple does not fit down flush into the rib dimple. Does anybody know where I can get this special dimple die or what the trick is when using a regular dimple die? Thanks

Lyle, you can buy the tank dies from Cleaveland Tools http://www5.mailordercentral.com/clevto ... r=DIE4263T for $36 or simply use the ones you already have and hit the hole with a deburring tool until the rivet sits flush. Another thing, you need to make sure you getting a good hit on your c-frame. I use to hit mine with a dead blow hammer, but switched to a regular hammer after visiting a local RV builder assistance program. I tried it both ways and the regular hammer gives a cleaner and crisper dimple.

...AND, finish the dimple off with a deburring tool!

This leaves a nice, crisp 100 degree hole for the rivet to seat into!
