Fun with Wires

Post by ptrotter »

I have been working on my panel wiring. What a project. I bought my radios from Stark Avionics and he makes the basic wiring harness but there is a lot to do to complete it so I have wires running everywhere in my shop right now. I'm amazed at how many wires there really are behind the panel. I have gained a lot of respect for the guys who build panels for a living. Hopefully I'll get most of the wires in the right place :-)

Looks good!

Man I dream about the day that I am to that point! Being an electrical/automation engineer, I am used to building control panels from scratch with thousands of wires going everywhere. Wiring my panel will be the best part for me. Just remember hot on the left and cold on the right and crap don't run up hill. Oh wait, that is for plumbing.... :o

Don't let one of them little wires accidently fall into that power strip behind the panel, you might let the smoke out and it is very hard to get that smoke back into the electronics!

Yeah, looking forward to that too. Still years away and I ordered my crimping tool today. I ran over 2 kilometers of low voltage wiring in my first house, so this panel thing shouldn't be too bad. Good job!

There is sure a lot of wire in that panel. My RV-6A is going to have a little less wire but there is still plenty of it. I have the insturment panel in place and I am making the final hook ups and wiring runs. Unfortunately I don't know how to post pictures on this site or I would send some along but. I have the ignition switch wired, the com, transponder, intercome, and Grand Rapids are almost completly wired. I have a complete wiring harness for my Dynon 10A so that is the last major wiring. I have started laying out wires to connect to the wings for the nav, strob, and landing lights.

We were taught in A&P School, the smoke that comes out is Magic Smoke and thats what makes things work. Once the magic Smoke comes out it usually doesn't work after that.

Makes sense to me. Certain types of smoke make many things (and people) do many things.

Yeah, sure does look like a lot of wires and tubing all crammed into a small area.

Pat, why the aluminum tubing to the airspeed and static ports of the instruments ? What's the advantage of it over tubing ?

It would seem to me a lot more work to use the aluminum tubing.

Dave,

There are not many disadvantages to using flexible tubing, but the one I don't like is that it sometimes has a tendancy not to stay put where you place it, and it can kink if it tucks itself into the wrong spot.

The soft aluminum is not that hard to work with, and I actually like playing with it, so that is really the main reason I used it. Both manifolds in the picture were fabricated in about two hours total time.

I know there is a little difference between a RV-8 and a E90, but maybe these pictures will bring you all some comfort. I look forward to the day that I work on my own wiring.

There are many KingAirs. I mainly work on the E90s and 1 C90. My company has over 140 KingAirs. Mainly U-21s (basically an unpressurized C90) 1 C90, about 10 E90s, a couple 100s, and a bunch of 200s. Beech made many models of the 90 series. A,B,C,E,F,GT, same with the 100s and 200s. I know nothing about the 300/350s or the 99 series (I think the 99s are close to the 100s, they look similar.)
This is just a typical wire job, I've seen worse. This plane (mine) only has a standard panel (Garmin 530, 430, 340, MX500, two GTX330).
Its all good and fun though.

Schaweeet.

Dual HSI w RMI setup. And a 430/530 Avidyne setup. Ill take one of those please. Though I would personally have change the locations of the RMI / VSI to get better symmetry for the scan
