Guys, Mark runs a Rans builders forum. It's not in his sig so I'll go ahead and post it: http://www.ransclan.com

You're welcome Mark! You'll also see Brian (hydroguy) over there quite a bit. Both have been helpful in supplying info and encouragement in building my Coyote.

Congrats on the emp kit Mark. Electric or manual trim?

Scott,

I went with the electric trim. Most of the people I talked to recommended the electric. Plus, I like the idea of having the trim button right on the stick.

I'm excited to get my tail kit. I'm not going to touch any parts until I read the manual a few million times!!

The one thing I learned about Van's manuals was read ahead. I would get to a spot in the manual where I thought, Dang, I wish I had known that two pages ago! :)

I would have, had I read ahead.

And whatever you do......DON'T RUSH!!! I read the manual when fitting vertical stabilser to my airframe & it said to trim the vertical spar by XX". Came to fit it.......IT WAS TOO SHORT!!! I DIDN'T MEASURE IT TO DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE CUTTING!!!!! Damn that was a time costly mistake!!! LOL

Live & learn.

Welcome Mark, and enjoy the build. Its a long rollercoaster ride!!

Wow that a big mistake! I covered my S-6 fuselage, primed it and painted it, and then realized I didn't properly prep the steel cage for primer and paint.

I had to cut off all the fabric, have the steel sand blasted, and reprime and repaint it! I think that was a little over a $2,000 mistake!

I won't be rushing anything on this project!! :)

Welcome to the RV world, Mark! You're in for a wonderful time!

I just wanted to say, I agree with the comments about reading the manual, but you can go to the other extreme, too. You don't need to know the entire thing before starting. It's impossible, in fact, to know that much stuff all at once. You just need to know what's coming at you in the next few steps, and you'll be fine. Time spent studying the drawings, however, is time very well spent. There are a lot of details in those drawings that aren't necessarily always mentioned in the manual.

I would also recommend building the vertical stabilizer first. I would, if I were starting again. Others have recommended this as well. Not a huge deal, but it goes together easily and quickly and really gives you a boost, before starting on the horizontal stab. The HS actually has some of the more challenging aspects of the empennage kit, so getting the VS behind you first is a great idea. Just my two cents...

Keep us posted on your progress, will you?

Before I built the S6 I was building an RV-7. I had the entire empenage completed in about a month and a half of part time building. The tail group is very well documented and goes together easily. You'll have a lot of fun!

Thanks for the tip Bruce. I've been looking at a lot of RV logs and others have also mentioned that they wish they would have started with the VS.

That's what I'll do!

Well, the short answer is yes.

If you're wasting time on the net and want to hear my funny/interesting story of why I didn't post them, here it is-for the last 3 months or so I've been remodeling my entire house. I ripped out all carpet, all baseboard, all room and closet doors, and then I took the kitchen down to the studs.

Everything is refinished now excpet I'm waiting on the install of my new carpet. So everything from the main floor was stored in the basement until the carpet can be installed.

Last Monday, I connected the water line to the back of the fridge and then left the house for about 8-9 hours when I took my dad flying in my S-6S.

When we returned home at about 12:15 am, I opened my door and heard what sounded like Niagra Falls coming from the basement! Somehow the water line popped off the fridge and just poured water for hours and hours. Needless to say, my basement was flooded.

So everything I had downstairs is now in my garage (mostly warped and ruined). Now add to the mess in the garage two large boxes from Vans, and it doesn't exactly make a nice pic!

I can't do anything more than just read the manual now until I get the garage cleared out and a 'workshop' built.

Before you reply, there's no need for "Sorry to hear that Mark..."

I don't own anything valuable and didn't lose anything I care about. In fact, I may make enough $$ on this to buy the rest of the RV kit

So...when I clean the garage, I'll pose with my boxes and pretend I just received it!
